Followup to the 847 mile tank
There were some questions, and I had my own, on the fuel mileage for that record tank I had a couple weeks ago, which showed about 38 MPG. Was on vacation for a week, but now I finally filled up again this morning. Put in 20.312 at 764 miles, which is 37.6 MPG, so it does not seem that the record tank was a fluke or a less-than-full fill up by yours truly.
And the good news is the my engine has not blown up yet, even with its knock. Just for grins I've attached the fuel mileage chart for the time I've owned the car. It only goes to January 2009, as I have not input the last 8 months' worth of data yet. Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 294K |

this seems to be the ballpark of what I get...
BEST tank i've ever gotten was 100% highway, aside from 1 on ramp, and 1 offramp on I75 from Tampa to dayton... 42mpg overall my range is also larger, due to the optional 26.8gal tank.... but even then, calculations are still correct

Hip - 764 is nothing, as I said I went 847 on the previous tank. I routinely get 750 plus per tank.
Jeremy - the trip is about 80% highway and 20% town. The commute is 55 miles one way, which takes me about 1 hr 5 minutes in the morning and 1:15 in the evening. I drive "normally" to heavy footed. I don't baby the car, except as I noted in the original post about the 847 mile tank. You have to drive the aspro 606 fairly heavy footed to keep up with traffic, make those 134 HP work! Matthias - it's not a 26.8 gallon tank...it's a 90 liter tank, which is 23.77 gallons. The only other W124 with this tank is the 500E, at least in North America. Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 294K |

Nice chart!!!!
On my 617.950 running 14.5 psi of boost, 3.07:1 axle and 205-70-14 tires, I netted 650 miles from my last tank (20.0 gallons) of fuel driving 60-65 for my 110 mile round trip daily commute...Robert P.S. I replaced the center link a while back and didn't have time to check the toe in until the following weekend. My fuel economy dropped 2.0mpg (consistently) and I discovered I was toed-out 1/4". When I set the toe in to 3/16" I picked my 2.0mpg right back up...Robert

For some reason, my mpg has been steadily increasing on my W116 over the past month or so. The engine now has about 25,000 to 30,000 since the complete rebuild. I adjusted the valves for the first time last month and found them almost dead-on.
Changing to the Dunlop 205-70-14 tires (over the defective Khumos) netted me a sizeable increase in mileage. Increasing the air pressure also picked up some mpg. I started with 28.0 psi and then raised the pressure to 35.0 psi. The sidewall maximum spec is 44 psi. Currently, I am driving the car 110 miles a day (round trip) to work, highway driving all the way. My average mpg per tank is around 28.0 mpg, which stays very consistent. My best 'repeatable' mileage recorded thus far has been 31.28 mpg, my previous 'best ever' of 32.5 has never been repeated. However, my last tank netted 517 miles on 17.0 gallons for a little over 30 mpg. Today, I am increasing tire pressures to 40 psi and will then re-evaluate over the next few tanks of fuel. I am planning a swap to a 2.47;1 axle in the near future and will report back on that too...Robert

My '95 had a "knock" --thought it was nailing---- and it DID blow up. On Christmas day. We think it spun a rod. Was full of Mobil 1. Never lost oil pressure on the gauge, or overheated. Just started knocking loudly, I pulled off the freeway and it died. Will still turn over, but makes a terrible scraping sound. Sitting on jackstands in my driveway awaiting decision to fix or sell as is.

This past summer I drove from half way in South Dakota (Missouri River) to my driveway in the Chicago burbs on one tank (about 720 miles). Drove 80-85 most of the way but I did have a considerable tail wind. Having a big tank is one of my favorites features of the 95 E300D. My former car was a VW R32 that had a baby tank of 13 gallons and needed to be filled up every other day.
