84 300td manual sunroof closing problem

The deflector flap in the front of the sunroof opening will not drop and allow the sunroof to close. I have to pull it down with my finger while trying to slide the sunroof closed and not smash my finger at the same time. There are ramp mechanisms on each side that are suppose to lower the deflector as the sunroof is closed. These seem to work fine when I use my hand to move them but they apparently do not work with the sunroof. Any suggestions.

Did this problem just start?
there are adjustments for the depth and closing amount on the sunroof.

This problem has developed gradually and recently become a constant issue. It seemed to me that there should be some adjustments possible but I have not been able to find where and how.

The front sliding-feet brackets on the sunroof panel also have small sliding feet that ride up onto the closing arms of the wind deflector. From all you have mentioned, I would guess they have worn out. The're just small pieces of plastic, but you will need to take out the panel to replace them. The good news is that a manual sunroof is easy to remove. But first check that the closing arms (ramps) are securely mounted in their slots on the sunroof frame. They can be easily pulled off, and they just snap into place.

As usual, it seems that it is likely that it is a combination of both of the above issues. By adjusting the deflector I can now close the sunroof as long as I pull the defelctor down befor I close it but not risking my fingers. Before I adjusted it that would not work.

I found an peice of rubber in the pastenger side slide tray, rubber, not plastic. It appears to be a support or cushion for a rail or some such, but I don't think it is one of the feet that was mentioned.

I had a repair manual on CD but discovered that it won't read on my new Vista computer (one of my many beefs with Vista). Anyway I have ordered a new one. It looks like I may end up taking the sunroof out to get it fixed right.

Thanks for the input. You have been very helpful.

I ran accross this while searching around at 3 AM, for lack of anything bette to do. This sounds like the part I found in my sunroof.

123 Sunroof Bushings?

I'll try to update this as I proceed, but am in no rush to fix this.
