W123 skid plate?

One of the oddities of my European-delivery, US model 1985 300TD is:

It has a skid plate of steel, finished to MB levels of detail. No rough welds, it's pressed to protect the radiator and oil pan, 2 pieces which bolt together with tubing arms extending up to the car's frame rails.

Does this sound like a factory option?

Yes. There was an M-B original skid plate for sale on ebay.de a while back.

From my now-foggy memory I also recall some form of small plastic air dam on the front of some 123's. It looks like there are mounting slots for such a thing on my 300CD, but I have not seen a photo where it's recognizable. This would be short, maybe 2-3 inches, and only covered the center section of the front end.

A search of the forum will bring up several discussions on 123 skid plates, including part number and price. They still may be available today. A good idea if you drive rough roads with high centers, rocks, etc.

Skid plates were listed in the European model microfilms as well as the SA section on the EPC. (Electronic Parts Catalog).

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone considered fabricating or modifying an existing skid plate? I'd like to have one, but I'm not in the market to spend 150-200 bucks for a factory one. What about taking something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1990-LT80-Suzuki-90-LT-80-skid-plate-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2a068f41f2QQitemZ180498678258QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_ 571wt_939

And fabricating a bracket to mount it?

There is a skid plate on the "85", 5 spd, Euro TD, I picked up a couple weeks ago, first one I've seen.

Hmmmmm.... A Paris/Dakar inspired skid plate? I wonder if any 300D's ever made the journey?

Or, just an afterthought for driving in third world environments?

Interesting.... I would like to have one as I drive in downtown Orlando on a regular basis. The city has already had to replace one tire and wheel and now the oil pan has a nice dent. I would love to have one of these "skid" plates.
