Howling rear end... (w126)
I picked up an '85 300SD.. Running and Rusty for $800..
I can easily use and offload enough parts to break even on it-- but was considering it for a "winter car" this winter in Ohio, to attempt to keep my '84 SD "clean and pristine..." I bought it with two known problems 1) fuel leak-- I drove it home using a gallon oil can, filled with diesel, leaving the filters, inline, and the return tube going into it.. Yeah, less than beautiful-- but less hassle than putting it on a tow dolly, and assured me it IS a running rusty beast, with no other "readily apparent" problems.. 2) the rear end howls (okay that's an over estimate) iirc correctly, I heard it in neutral as well-- leading me to think it's a wheel bearing or halfshaft/cv joint.. Since I've done NEITHER on a 126, I wondered if anyone had any good "diagnosis" tips, and "hints" on getting it apart... Again-- if it's a serious hassle, I'll drive her till she drops, tow her home and start "harvesting" her parts.. Just wondered if someone could give me some direction.. ![]()
