No one has brought up the fact that cars' model years are misidentified fairly often. Yesterday, I pulled an exhaust manifold off a car that was marked as a 78 240D. Examination of the emissions and data stickers indicated the car was clearly a 77 with a 7/77 build date. I've seen stuff like that quite a few times. More common is when a car is built in the calendar year preceeding the model year (say a 77 built 10/76 like mine) being subsequently misidentified as a 76 model.
