Rough Start with Smoking

Hi All

Whenever I start my car for the first time of the day, the engine runs a little rough at first (15-20 seconds) and my exhaust briefly expels grey smoke. Then, for the first 5-7 minutes of driving, my shifting is a bit rough. After the durations I mentioned have passed, the car runs smoothly. This ONLY occurs during the first start of the day, and other times I start it, even 10 hours later, are smooth. Any ideas as to what the cause of this is and how I could remedy it? Thanks!

Hello what kind of car do you have? Next question is your idle kind of rough? or is it smooth? How is your 0-60 time? How long have you owned the car? Has it always done this or is it recent? My guess as of right now is a diesel purge and injectors but that is a rough guess.....

my bad, should have mentioned that; 85 300td; my idle is fine with the exception of when i'm idling right after I start up for the first time of the day, I have owned the car for only 4 months, and this problem has been going on for about a month.

thanks for the reply

Might be Glow Plugs or a small air leak in your Fuel Supply system.
Below is our list of how to do it.
There is a site diesel giant that has a pictorial on how to check your Glow Plugs with a Volt/Ohm Meter (if in the US Harbor Freight sells inexpensive ones as low as $3 on sale around $5-6 when not on sale.)

Transmission stuff could be a problem with the Vacuum System itself; adjustment to the Vacuum Valve, adjustment of Vacuum modulator, Transmission Fluid needs changing, or just plain wear in your transmission.

It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

If you live in the US you might consider buying the 2CD Service Manual Library direct from Mercedes $19.99+$7 shipping. Covers the complete car in detail with the exception of rebuilding transmissions and turbochargers.

If not in the US maybe you can use the part number to get it locally.
