Adding brake fluid

I posted a few weeks ago about my BRAKE light coming on, on the dash. Now my pedal goes to the floor. I know I should haver added fluid earlier, but whatever. My question is can I add fluid now?????

If the master is empty the fluid went somewhere. Fill it back up and have a helper press the brake pedal as you watch for leaks.

No, too late. I think air have been sucked in. Need to bleed the lines and check for leak.

The brake system does not consume any fluid in the normal course of operation, although the fluid level will lower slightly as the brake pads wear and the fluid capacity of the calipers increase.

That being said, if you are losing brake fluid you have a serious problem and you must find out where it is leaking and remedy the problem, you can't just add more fluid and keep driving.

As mentioned earlier, if fluid is getting out, that means air can get in, so brake bleeding will be necessary.

Don't procrastinate on fixing something as important to your safety (and other's) as the brakes.

I agree. Simply adding fluid at this point will not restore normal operation and my guess is a hard line has rusted through somewhere.

Are you out of fluid, or just low? If you're out or very low, like these guys said, definitely locate the leak before doing anything else. Check around the master cylinder, hard lines and rubber lines, as well as calipers. It might not be that hard a fix. When you're sure you have no leaks, fill up and do a flush/bleed. You'll have air in your system which has to be bled out.
Also check your brake pads ... if they're real low, that can make the fluid level drop as well as increase pedal travel. Wouldn't hurt to do a check of all components anyway ... pads, rubber lines, discs, make sure calipers aren't stuck. Brakes are something you want to stay on top of.

Get to the root cause, please. A temp fix can mean an accident . Be sure to locate, repair, refill, bleed refill, bleed etc etc
