1997 E300D Automatic down shift at low speeds

I have a 1997 E300D with 162000 original miles....the 5 speed transmission seems to shift pretty smoothly and works well most of the time.....the only issue I have experienced is, what appears to be an automatic downshift when slowing down to come to a stop.....at speeds around 15MPH. Is this normal ? If not, any ideas on what might be causing this to happen ?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Brian, I hope so. My "new" one onwer cherry 76 with 100,000 on the clock does the same. Much more pronounced than the 95 ever did.

I assume you find the downshift to be "harsh" or rough which is why you are questioning it? The transmission up and downshifts all the time but if you find the 2-1 downshift to be harsh this is a common issue.

Do you know if your car has the electronic or mechanical transmission? '97 was the transition year and some late '97s have the 722.6 electronic one.

Check its vin on the russian site (http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng) and see if it is a 722.6 tranny. If so you can try resetting the adaptation codes and most of the time that helps with the "harsh" downshift you described. See this similar thread on the MBCA board:

Funny, my car did the same thing this morning but at a much slower speed - about 5 MPH. I never notice it though, unless I'm doing something like driving slowly through a parking deck, speeding up and slowing down for speed bumps.

It does seem strange though, for the car to shift this way since all of the other shifts are velvety smooth.

BTW, Marty, I'm a MBCA member, do I have a logon on that forum too?

Yes, mine has the electronic 5 speed transmission. I would say that the downshift is a little rough, not that bad, it just seems unexpected...just wanted to make sure it was innocuous. BTW, I also have a 96 E300D with a 4 speed (not electronic) and that one does not downshift like the 97.

You need to register there to login:

As far as technical information goes that board isn't very good. I usually check in on it every couple of days and precious little has changed. This is a much better source of answers.

Well you might try the reset procedure I posted on MBCA and see if it helps any. It usually works.

Also, have you done a fluid/filter service to the tranny recently?
