95 E300D A/C doen't work after rain

Drove in heavy rain and through some puddles. Now the A/C doesn't work.

This has happened before but always works again after shutting engine off and starting back up.

This car does not have the cover on the bottom of the engine.

Any suggestions?

I believe that your car uses a compressor speed sensor to determine belt slip. A wet belt will often slip a bit and disable the compressor until you turn it off and back on. In addition, a dirty sensor can help the problem remain.

Check that the electrical plug didn't come loose after hitting a puddle.

The belt is not slipping. This happened a week ago and still doesn't work.

I was driving in heavy rain with puddles. Car even hydroplaned a few times. There is not a cover on the bottom of this engine either. I think some thing got wet and failed.

There is pressure in the system, blower works, and no fuses blown.

I removed the connector on the compressor. Inspected, found dry, & reinstalled. I did notice bare wires going into the connector. The insulation has worn away. But I don't think this is the problem. This would probably cause a fuse to blow.

My service manual has a wiring diagram but it might be the wrong one. It is titled "Models 124.125/130/185/190/193/330/339 with automatic transmission as of August 1987"

My car is a 1995 Model 124.131. Anyone have the correct wiring diagram?

Three wires on that connector? If so, one is the power for the clutch (going to the grounded case) and the other two are the speed sensor. Shorting or grounding these two will not blow a fuse, but they will prevent operation. So will water between them.

Should be some sort of speed sensor problem. When I turn on A/C the compressor runs for a couple seconds then shuts off.

I will try to insulate these bare wires somehow. I unwrapped the black cloth/tape on these wires about 3 inches back. The insulation is very brittle all the way.

Can I replace this wiring back to the connector?

Had a similar problem on mine. Driving in rain or through a car wash and the system would not work for a few hours. After it dried out no problem. Ended up being a bad wire harness. New harness and never had the problem since. Somethig worth checking as harnesses from that time were notorious for going bad.

Problem is fixed.

I insulated the bare wires on the compressor connector. A/C works fine. Temporary fix though. I used electrical tape.

The insulation on the wires is very brittle. It kept falling apart more and more as I wrapped electrical tape. Had to go back about 3 inches.

I really should replace the harness. I don't know anything about this. Is it just the harness for the A/C or the entire engine? Is it a difficult job?

Your '95 might have had the notorious "bio-degradable insulation" in which case the entire wiring harness should be replaced. During the early to mid-90's this was a problem on all of them. You are lucky in lasted this long, many of them have been replaced years ago.
