Larry makes a good point. To that I would only add that even on this site one can "shop around." The forum is associated with two online parts catalogues - Fastlane and All Parts Express, they don't offer the exact same things, but there is a lot of overlap - so check them both to make sure you are getting the best price.

Also, if you have ever called Phil about a part, you know that he is more interested in helping people out than making a fast buck. I have had Phil point me in other directions when he could have easily sold me a more expensive part. That alone makes me want to turn my business this way.

Have I bought every part I need from here? No. Sometime it just makes more sense to buy used, or if I can find something locally and I need it in a pinch. But when I can, I try to support the forum.

I am not advocating that everyone buy every single part they ever need from the guys here either, although I'm sure that Phil and them would love it and even deserve it if you did.

What I am commenting on is that it is RUDE to come here, and in the open, discuss alternative suppliers. We all, including Phil, are quite aware that there are alternative suppliers that will get some of the business. What I am trying to point out is that such comments here are very much like walking into the local parts counter and recommending the Auto Supply's competitors to another customer right in front of the proprietor while he's listening.

My guess it the OP never gave it any thought or had it pointed out how much OUR vendors play a role in this forum. I don't think he meant to be rude he just didn't know. I agreee with the above post and make it a practice to support my vendors, I tell most of my retail vendors I don't want to shop them and I don't mind them MAKING money just DON"T make it ALL on me. Lets not hang the OP (unless he does it again) Thanks

Every time I see the slightest MENTION of a competing vendor on this forum I just shake my head. I wonder if the same person that will come on this forum and discuss the forums competitors would walk into their local auto supply and start telling the other customers where there are better suppliers in town?

It just seems EXTREMELY rude to me. If you need a part and get advice or help here, why not buy the part here? Even if it costs more to buy the part here, which I doubt is true very often or by much of a margin, buy the part here and consider the help you got from this site as customer service.

Is there a parts store in your town that has such a wealth of knowledge as can be found on this site? I doubt it. Is the other online vendor giving you valuable troubleshooting information for free? Probably not.

If your conscience will let you come here for help and then buy the part somewhere else, why not just go buy the part and keep your mouth shut (or your fingers off the keyboard) and not rub it in?
Exactly.

Thanks.

Well, I have to say that I never really put the whole picture together. I have bought many parts from Phil, and have had lengthy conversations with him about vacations, favorite cars, weather.... Phil has differed me to other vendors when he could not obtain the requested parts.
So please keep in mind that there was never an intent to insult anyone. I simply was looking for any opinions on the style of primer pump that was being offered by someone, and when the text was "asterisked" out i figured it was because of the sponsor, only i hadn't seen that before. Please accept my apology. It was a case of ignorance not arrogance.

No harm Dean.

We just prefer that folks don't discuss competitors to Fastlane on the same forum that is sponsored by the parts sales from Fastlane. It's just common courtesy.

BTW, we do mention it in the rules of the forum.

I suppose it has been a long time since I've been through the rules (2004, or there about)
