I know the owner pretty well. The phone is not a good way to get a hold of him. He's a full service and custom VW diesel shop with a full online store front. It's just him and another guy in the shop and they both are turning wrenches all day, so the phone gets neglected sometimes. He'll usually responds to emails pretty quickly, and if you keep calling he'll answer eventually:P. You can order everything online as well, but I know some folks like to talk to a real person.

This end cap is the one you want. It's included in the injector return line kits, but it you buy bulk hose you'll have to buy the end cap separate.

what about the cigar hose? where do you get a viton or viton lined one of those?

You don't. But very few people have problems with running a straight hose in place of the cigar hose. A few people, myself included, experience pulsing noises or pulsing sensations when they put a straight hose on. I had a regular cigar hose on my 300TD because it made noises w/ the straight hose. I ran over 30k miles of biodiesel through it and never had hose problems. I've run 60k miles of veg oil and biodiesel through the cigar hose on my 240D and it's still holding strong. The stock cigar hoses seem to hold up to biodiesel and veg oil pretty well. I'm not sure they'll last as long as a viton hose will, but they seem to hold up for a long time.

Viton is expensive material.
The injector return lines kit's aren't nearly that expensive.
I don't use the pure viton hoses, I use the viton lined SAE90R9 hose. Much cheaper and more durable.

Source and p/n for that SAE hose?

Im not looking to go grease/bio, but my 82 has an idle shake, especially when hot, and everything is perfect. So what might not be perfect in my view is the 30 yo hoses...

Or am I better off ordering the entire set of another material?

Do you have a cigar hose or a straight hose for the return from the fuel filter to the steel line? A straight hose can sometimes cause odd pulsing noises or feelings. The injector return lines can also cause a little rough idle if the have collapsed inside and cause restriction. But usually rough idle is not hose related. It's injectors, valves, compression, rack damper, or filters.

The viton lined hose part number is SAE30R9 it's stamp right one the hose. It's sold at many auto parts store or hydraulic shops. Greaseworks also sells it in bulk.

Idle isn't rough, it's extremely smooth, just the engine shakes, which is felt in the car.

All the stuff mentioned is done - valves done, compression good/consistent, injectors rebuilt and balanced, rd makes no difference, filters done but no change.

Is the hose readily available in metric sizes so it is the correct fit? Would it be used on the long clear hoses that connect to barbed fittings too?

Thanks!

SAE90R9 hose; is carried by any of the Auto Parts Chain Stores as Fuel Injection Hose and the SAE number is on the Hose.
The GoodYear version has a blue lining inside.

5/16" ID Hose works on the Fuel Inlet Hoses and maybe the Cigar Hose.
The Clear Plastic Hard Lines can be replaced with 1/4" ID Hose.

When I removed the Plastic Hoses from mine I found the easiest way to remove it from the Jags was to heat the Plastic till it was just soft enough to yank off.
If heated to much it melts to the Jag and is more trouble to get off.
I used a Butane Lighter but a Candle would also work.
Remember the Metal parts are going to get hot when you do the above.

It's not SAE90R9, it's SAE30R9. I mis-typed it in that one post.

JHZR2 - How can you distinguish between rough idle and a shaking engine? Have you replaced the motor and trans mounts. As well as the engine shocks? Have you tried a new rack damper bolt?

When I've replaced the hard plastic lines in the past, I cut the line off at the end of the nipple, then a 5/16" hose will fit right over the top with clamps.

Yes, new mounts from dealer. New shocks and shockmounts from Phil. RD too, adjusting it does nothing (well, it will make it get worse, but never absolutely smooth).

And again, it is extremely intermittent.

Distinguish between rough and shaking? Few things. First, it doesnt feel like a misfire or anything like that. It doesnt feel like my 240 at low idle setting, or when Ive played with idle on the 300D, and took it too low.

If I took a video of the engine when the car was "shaking", you wouldnt even notice the motion of the engine.

But yet sit in the car and you feel a very smooth, cyclic motion to the car that feels like you are being shaken.

Top end is really strong (speed/power wise), acceleration is great, runs strong and economically. Im not new to these cars, and everything seems good to me. Nothing operationally out of the ordinary.

It is the intermittent characteristic that is most annoying. It also seems to be ambient temp related, in the winter likely Ill not feel it much if at all, even after a hard highway run. Summer, more likely to feel it even just tooling around town and stopped at a stoplight.
