I bought mine off this site. They paid for themselves in two weekends.

E-Bay, picked up about 5 used tools for $58 a few yrs ago.

they are pricy new, then so is a valve adjustment at a shop. will pay for themselves one or two adjustments.

a while back there was a guy on e-bay selling only one wrench ata time.
he listed them for $7.00. one actually sold for that price plus shipping.

What more is needed other than the spring compressor to get shims out?
Is there a list of tools needed based on model?

There is no shim changing that I know of during a Valve Adjustment on the 83 300SD of the origional poster. Tools the service Manual tells you you need are the 2 Valve adjusting Wrenches, Feeler Gauges and the 3rd wrench to hold keep the Spring Retainer from moving (there are other ways to do that).
And, you may need tools to rotate the Engine depending on how you want to do that.

Now on my Volvo diesel it is a different story. You are supposed to Compress the Spring and yank out a Spacer/Shim and change the size to adjust the Valves.

You might read below and see how others have done it and what tools they used:

Make your own. I bought 2 14mm wrenches from a pawn shop for 50c each. It was supprisingly easy to bend them when they got red hot.

Total cost $1.00

you really only need a 14mm and a 9/16 wrench. I have done this way several times. of course it is easier w/ the bent wrenches, but still on that number 5 cylinder I use a plain wrench.

ohh- and a feeler gauge set. I also made my own remote starter switch to rotate the engine.

Thanks guys. great info.
Is there a model mercedes diesel that uses shims? I distinctly remember changing valve shims on a mercedes diesel.

I am happy to learn that the valve adjustment coming up soon for our W123 will not need shims. Adjustment via wrenches is much more convenient.
