What is the condition of your glow plugs?
Does this happen when starting the engine when at operating temperature? By your post, I'm going to assume you're not referring t a 240, but a federal 1985 300D. Please put your car somewhere in your post.

It's an 1985 300d Federal. The glow plug holes have been reamed the glow plugs replaced about 1.5 years ago. It starts fine at operating temperature. It has only had rough starts since blocking off the vacuum lines as described in my previous post.
The easy test here is simply plug everything back together and see if it affects the starts positively. I'm going to do that this week, although to my understanding it seems like the changes I made shouldn't have had an affect on the starting. thanks |

I replumbed the vacuum system for the last week and my starts were noticeably smoother. This morning I blocked off and unplugged the vacuum convertor and switchover valve (#81 and #84) again and my start was very rough, lots of smoke. Once warm though everything ran splendid.
am I breaking a circuit to the glow plugs by unplugging 81 and 84, so perhaps the plugs aren't glowing? |
