Help! Somehow Triggered Permanent Anti-Theft Alarm
I removed the gauge cluster ion my 201 - had to disconnect the hose to the drivers side climate-control vent and reach up in there to back out speedo nut. Replaced speed sensor for cruise. Now anti-theft alarm will not shut off. Is there a reset switch? I was pretty careful not to screw anything up behind the cluster. Right now battery/horn disconnected. Any help appreciated.

i think once you reassemble everything and reconnect the alarm horn, it won't turn on. never heard of anythong on the cluster which triggers the car alarm--that's usually triggered by the central locking vac pump when opening of doors without the key

Unlock the doors with the driver's keylock, or either of the other keylocks and it should shut off. To permanently disable it unplug the BECKER box under the passenger toe-board.

on 86 model w201, the car alarm relay might be behind the plastic kick panel that holds the hood release handle

OK - thanks folks for the help. I get the dunderhead award tonight. Note to self: When car alarm goes off, put key in door, turn key to lock or unlock - alarm magically turns off.
One plus: I got up close and personal with my FSM "Electrical Troubleshooting Manual." Another plus: My original mission was to repair/improve cruise control - replacing the hall sensor (or "transmitter") gave new life to a crusie amp that may have a touch of Alzheimer's. This car is teaching me to be a smarter person....
