How to tell which is supply and return?

I have a 83 300dt and have been getting big chunks of black debris in my primary filter. i also stall out at about 5 gallons of fuel in the tank. so i either have a clogged filter or the supply and return fuel lines are crossed.

one of the metal lines is angled up while the other is horizontal. the angled one is stacked on top of the horizontal one.

i tried to search for this information...came up with nothing.

please help.

On mine the top one is the return line.
But follow the hose from the round silver item with hoses going to it. The line heading back to the rear of the car is the return line.

The black stuff can be disintigrating hose or deal fungus. Yeah, primary filter!!!

The front rubber hoses do not cross. The bottom steel line goes to the primary (clear) filter and lift pump on the side of the injector pump.

The return from the secondary filter/manifold goes through the "cigar" hose to the top steel line.

If the tank strainer is cloggedish, you can remove it from the bottom of the car to clean it. Some go nuts and remove the tank or pressure wash it in the car. Your mileage may certainly vary.

You have the two hoses between the engine/lines, and also short runs between the lines/tank. You can use 5/16" ID hose and worm clamps to replace those, or get the "real" ones for not too much.

Is it true that you can test for a clogged fuel tank strainer by switching the hoses on your return and entry lines? If performance improves with fuel coming in off of the return line, then your strainer needs to be replaced.

^ This will result in fuel being "kicked back" from the normal supply line and dislodge "gunk" from the strainer, albeit temporarily.

If/when you replace the return and vent hoses at the tank be careful to leave a small gap between the hose and the rubber gasket on the bottom of the tank. You should have a small amount of metal line showing between the rubber parts.

I butted the rubber return hose tightly against the rubber gasket but failed to tighten the clamp enough. The hose-line connection leaked a small amount of fuel but the hose-gasket connection was tight and pushed diesel back into the trunk so it looked like my tank was leaking into my trunk. Leaving a small gap and tightening the clamp fixed it.

Yes. It will also backwash the tank strainer. Be prepared to change the primary filter often. Everthing in the tank will get sucked up and collect there.

I'm temporarily running a W116 this way.

Also, make sure there's plenty of fuel. The return line is higher in the tank.

correct hook up

the pics and info let me know i have everything set up correctly. i think i am going to replace the hose and clean the screen. i do like the idea of switching the lines to backwash the tank and catch the junk in the primary filter... i may have to try that. the last time i checked the primary filter when the car was running i saw black flakes floating in the filter, about the size of a paper hole punch leavings. is there any easyish way to clean the hard lines of deposits while i have the hoses unplugged? or should i just put startron cleaner in it and leave the deposits be, hopeing that they do not all fall off and clog the car?
