240D low vacuum
My franken 240 has low vacuum (13" or so Hg w/ engine revved) I thought it was a leak, so I plugged the T's to the cabin & SOV, brought revved vacuum up to 22". Now it's back down. Plugged T to EGR, no benefit. What's breaking? is it the vacuum pump on it's way out?

No one seems to like to check the Vacuum right where it come out of the Vacuum Pump. They make a rubber cone shaped adapter to hook up to your Vacuum Gauge.
Remove the Vac Tube and shove the cone firmly into the fitting on the Vacuum Pump and it will tell you what the Pump is doing and you will have your answer. After that it is possible for the various valves inside of the Pump to be gummed up an not closing. The easiest to get at is the one where the Vac Tube attaches to the Vacuum Pump. I hosed mine out with WD40 and put it back on. The other Valves are inside of the Vacuum Pump. When I looked at those I removed the Pump so I could also inspect the Bearing and Arm assemblie in the back. The little screws that held the front plate on were croded in. I sheard of 2 and after that heated the rest, PB Blaster and I used a Hand Impact (the type you hit with a hammer) to keep the Scredriver bit from jumping out and stripping the screws.

What is SOV?
If you have your gauge plugged into the main vac line and any other T's plugged and you are reading too low of vac, then either your pump is not pulling enough vac or your booster is leaking. The next step is to remove the main vac line from your brake booster and plug the end. If the vac jumps up then the booster is leaking. If there is no change then the pump needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks, pump and booster was my short list. Good idea to check at the hose and then at the pump before breaking out the money shovel Does anyone know nominal operating vacuum? I've heard as high as 27" Hg.
