Getting rid of the primer pump
Mine is leaking and I was already going to add an electric helper pump to my car. Can I just remove the hose leading into the hand pump and plug it into the IP and bypass it completely? For fuel filter changes I will just turn the key and let the electric pump fill the filters.

Your time and money might be better spent looking into oil leaks

no kidding! I already spend a few hundred on parts for this car! I have sitting in the garage waiting to go on the oil cooler hoses and all the gaskets/seals for the oilfilter housing and an oilpan gasket. That should fix most of what is left that is leaking! Already did the turbo oil lines and the return to the pan.
the big probelm I have is after sitting for a day or 2 all the fuel in the lines goes away and air enters so i have to prime the system again to run it. When I prime it I get a ton of diesel leaking out the pump!

How difficult was it to replace the oil return lines on the turbo? Something that I should do...

If I have an electric helper pump, what the point of the hand pump (other then priming if the electric pump fails)?
I pulled the intake and exhaust manifold with the turbo in one piece. it was not bad. only a little cussing and screaming ![]()

Yeah, but how often do you have to use the Primer Pump manually?! Only once in a while after chaning filter then you don't touch it - electric one will work, but it's another thing that could break. Once a replacement manual pump is in place it will probably outlive the rest of the vehicle. My .02

The new type hand primer pump is about $20 and once your fuel system is operating properly you probably wont need it till you run out of fuel or change filters.

This is what I replaced in mine:
http://www dot a u t o h a u s a z dot com - search for Diesel Primer Pump - as it won't let me post the complete url... PM me if you need the full link. It's been leak free ever since and it works much better.

In All Part X, look under Diesel Injection, then hand primer Pump.

My original primer was leaking so I put a new style Febi from AHAZ a few weeks ago.
It started leaking soon after and the car got harder to start even on mild days with full glow cycling. I finally ordered a Bpsch pump from Phil and popped that in day before yesterday and the leak is gone and the car starts easily again with no issues even with this mornings temps in the 20's! Cheap and easy. It turns out, the Febi pump was not leaking but the sealing washer was. So I now have a spare pump.

I have gone to electric in the past for other reasons. It will work fine, but it is important that you find and fix the air leaks, They will turn into fuel leaks if you do not.

on a related note- can someone tell me what size wrench is needed to remove the original stock screw in hand primer pump?
I have to go buy a wrench for this, and am not sure of the size
