83 300D DIY Articles

I haven't owned a MB diesel in a couple years since the last one was too bad off to fix. I've recently purchased a 300D in good shape that needs some work. She needs some work to be a daily driver so I'm offering to do some DIY articles for the forum (since this forum has helped me so much in the past.)

If you would like to see a specific article let me know and I will take pictures and notes during the process. Things I will be doing to the car in the next couple weeks are: front and rear shocks, engine mount, front and rear window seals (will be installed by a glass man so I might not be able to do this), tranny filter, valve adjustment, diesel purge, other routine maintenance (oil change, fuel filters, etc.)

Future items to tackle: cruise control repair, hydrogen booster install (gained 2-5mpg on old 300SD), WVO conversion (mostly fuel line replacement), door lock vacuum repair, and other things I can't think of right now.

Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the Forum, and merry Christmas. hope Santa was good to you.

There have been a lot of DIY projects thave been posted over the years. some of the exceptional ones have been made into a Wike.
PeachPartsWiki: Do It Yourself Articles - Mercedes Vehicles

There is always room for improvement. one thing I notice is if pictures are posted using Photobucket or other source. the pictures may not be there several yrs later when the account has been deleted or closed out. best if they are posted on this sites server.

www.Dieselgiant.com has done a lot of pictorials. give you some ideas. If his site goes down, then this resource is gone.

Merry Christmas to you also!

The engine mounts are the one thing I have done (and have to do again) that I don't see a tutorial on. I remember seeing one somewhere but can't find it now. I'm going to do the driver side today so I will take good notes and pictures. Who should I contact to send the information to? I would rather not just post it somewhere and it disappear over time but be preserved for others.

This site and diesel giants was my ONLY two 'go to' articles for repairing things on my last MB. It would be great to have all the information from these two on one site or in one PDF.

I would have done a better job last time if I would have known I would find another deal on a MB diesel.

Have a safe and Happy New Year!!!

I for one, would love the pics and the step-by-step on motor mounts, and valve adjustment. Will you also be rebuilding a driveline by any chance?

I was able to get the motor mount done before getting my wisdom tooth pulled (good times!) I only needed to do the drivers side but the passenger side is really no different. I am working on the tutorial now, if you want a copy send me a message with your email (do not post it on the forum!)

Why not start a thread and call it "How I fitted new motor mounts to my 300D"?

Go for it. The key word is pictures.

You might review what others have done and do your diy Filling in the things that folks forgot or did not photograph.

Also each person doing a job has a different way of doing the same job to some extent.

Also many breeze through their DIYs with no issues and the a person following the DIY who has something stuck or sheared off is surprised and has to come back to the Forum with Questions. So the more DIYs we have gives a broader range of experience.

Yeah, if we put the keywords: DIY and/or HOWTO in the name, it will make the articles easy to find.

As for Wiki's; gotta love em. Oh, and pictures.

on the engine, there are two . . . left & right . . . same part number.

On the tranny . . . there is one, and the rear, there may be two!!! The engine one is different than the tranny or rear mounts.

... I highly doubt you will need to replace the shock mounts, plus they are VERY expensive...
I'd stick to the three main mounts, (left, right, and trans) and also replace the motor shocks as well.
