Idle screw is on the inside back of the m-w injection pump. 14mm deep well socket to loosen the lock nut. CW raised the idle speed. CCW lowers the idle speed.

We are talking about something different than that. On the early 240D cars there was a idle adjust knob on the dash. Does your car have one of these?

Actually I am referring to the adjustment screw on the IP. I have the knob on the dash, but have never had a need for it, and it doesn't work anyway. I am wanting to know how to adjust the overall idle, engine warmed up, idling too fast. Since there isn't a tach or distributor, how does one check rpms on a diesel, and what is the correct idle rpm?

I do belive that the idle adjustment knob is neccicary. You'll be fiddlin with the idle speed and get it where you want it warmed up then it will be too low when it's cold. Set it where you want it cold then it will be too high when it's warm. So you need that adjustment to compensate.
