First, thank you to all the people who spent time and effort on this forum. I have researched the swap mentioned above and read each entry a couple of times. It has been a great help.
After owning a 300SD that my wife parked in the back of a van at 45 (she and my son walked away unhurt), I got a very respectable 82' 240D for my older son's first car. That was 3 years ago and now my younger son is to get the car. The problem is two fold, the auto transmission has lost reverse and the car really is dangerous in city traffic as it is so slow that it results in freeway merges at 40 mph in the fast San Diego traffic.
I was looking to fix the transmission when I ran across a 82' 300 turbo donor car with a sweet engine, automatic transmission, rear end etc. The rest of the car is done. From the forum I learned it should bolt in except for a vibration shock mount that will need to be changed. I plan to change the entire drive train (engine, transmission, rear end. drive shafts etc) and the instrument panel. Now to my question (finally!).
What should I do to the engine/transmission while it is out in order to make it last for the next decade? What seals, etc? Should I do the timing chain (I do not have a long history on the engine but it is in the 250,000 mile range). I plan to do the swap in the last two weeks of December. Thank you again, if for nothing else for reading this far!
