My personal preference is to adjust the cable so that there is the slightest possible amount of take-up at idle. Otherwise, it is difficult to gauge the level of preload that exists without removing the transmission pan and viewing the regulator valve plunger. Admittedly, a slight amount of preload is not detrimental, but more than that would negatively affect the shifting protocol.

Interesting info from the German manual

The diesels with vacuum are in 2 at idle and downshift to 1 when you press the accelerator.

722.3xx (installed on most turbodiesels) only starts in 2 if you press the accelerator slightly (or deeper with M110-engines from 1983). At idle it is in 2, pressing the accelerator causes it to downshift.

The 722.4xx start out in 1, at least when you press the accelerator deep enough (by downshifting to 1).

From the German MB Service Manual.
