722.3 in '81-'85 turbodiesels W123 and W126

Two possibilities:

1) The transmission always starts in first gear.

2) The transmission always starts in second unless the pedal is pressed..........and then it drops down to first.

Please vote and kindly note the year of the vehicle when you do.

Also, if you don't own one of the vehicles in the title, please avoid voting.

Thanks,

B.C.

Using "all four gears" does not define whether the transmission started in first or second. Furthermore, "starting" in second does not mean "stays in second" when accelerating.

Before anyone insists that their transmission always starts in first, there are a couple of things you might try first:

1. With the car pointed down an incline, move off from a stop without touching the narrow pedal. Then count the upshifts until you should be in 4th. Verify you were in 4th by manually downshifting. If the transmission only shifts twice, you did not start in 1st.

1. Move off in D without touching the narrow pedal. Then select L or 2. If the transmission downshifts, you weren't in 1st.

1983 300D (123.133, 617.952, 219k and original innards). Rests in second, immediately shifts to first upon pressing (not "flooring") the narrow pedal.

85TD. Always starts in 1st.

77 300d--always started in second and would only shift down to 1st with kickdown switch or moving selector into 1st.

Apparently, I'm starting in second and only getting to 1st when I mash the accelerator pedal. First confirmed appearance of first gear today.

I'll go with option 2 for my 1982 300D, though the pedal doesn't have to be mashed, just pressed to downshift.
I tested it one day. If I put the transmission in D and took my foot off of the brake and let it coast, it coasts along in second gear. Then, I shifted into L from Dwhile coasting at about 5 mph and I could feel the rolling get faster. Then I put it back in D and it slowed down as it shifted into 2nd. I've heard the reason why it does that has to do with less brake pedal pressure being needed to hold the car in 2nd gear as opposed to 1st?

My '82 W126 always starts in 1st gear; I adjusted the cable to make the car do so. It helps in these western NC mountains... especially when getting up from the highway and into the garage here just a few miles north of Mt. Mitchell.

Off topic, but the W116 300d will only downshift into 1st if you come to a complete and absolute stop. Some kind of pendulum switch somewhere initiates the downshift. But once stopped, it starts in 1st.
