EARILY 80s 300TDT not running

Hi there, thinking about another 300D Only had my 81 for a month or so, but already on the hunt for a turbo..

Found a 300TDT, early 80s that will not start. Owner said the last time it ran he could not get it to stop so he used the engine stop and after that he could not get it to start. To me sounds like an easy fix, but I don't know what that fix is.... About 180k on her.

Where would you guys start to get it running? He said the vacuum system seemed fine before, but I am not sure about that... If I can get a good price, I might snag her.

Well unable to turn off sounds like a Vac leak. I went through that on my TDT not running could be as simple as air in the system or something more complex

Make sure the engine stop is returned to the operating position. May be that it is stuck at the "stop" position

Usually the glow plugs are the culprit, check them for resistance.

Will the engine turn if the plugs are bad?

The engine will turn over but it may not start if the one or more glow plugs are bad.

Not shutting off it a vac issue. It sound to me like the stop lever got stuck and isn't allowing the car to start. I'd be hesitant to move it though, cause if you do and the car fires up the owner may not want to sell it any more or may raise the price on you. I'd look at the linkages and see if they look like the stop lever it stuck.

I'll be the first to join

Sorry about the extra T, just copied it from the classified ad. Leaning here, but a great group to be learning with. Thanks for the help!

As mentioned, yes it'll turn over, but the pre-chambers won't be hot enough to start the combustion process.
diesel giant has a decent write up on the procedure.

I would get it on a flatbed and haul it to a warm garage. I agree the cost will probably go up once the thing is started - of course it is a gamble though.
