axel id
for some reason my left rear axle failed after only a measly 300,000+ miles
the question is on a 1981 240D they used either an annular or homokenitic axle. Is there a way to ID the axle without removing it. I will be fixing it away from home so I want to get the right one the first time naturally. thank you Jon J 81 240D

The annular axles have hex bolts showing on the inner part of the axle near the diff. The homokenitic just have big smooth cans on the inner and outer ends.
The advantage of the annular type is that once they are installed, you can remove the axles without removing the diff. cover and C-clips.
