has anyone ever used or is currently using hastings oil filters for their diesel

i was wondering if anyone here has ever used hastings oil filters for their diesel?

i recently bought one for a do it yourself oil change and was told by several mb people not to use it.....

i was wondering if that was the general consensus....

thanks for reading

If its made India, Korea or China, I wouldn't use it. Cheap filters are a good way to wreak a good motor. I dont hear of fastlane selling them. Maybe best to hear from whunter ala Roy or Brian. Best to use something that has plenty of background with diesel Mercedes. I think Hastings are big in water purification, not quite the same thing. I doubt if they would be making filters for 60x motors, more likely buying from some place with their name printed on them.

How about some pics and the part number and which Car the Filter is for? With those maybe some info can be found.
Sometimes filters are made by other companies. As an Example Champion Labs makes filters for a lot of different brand named companies.

See if your part numbers match below. Also as the other member said tell us where the filter is made.
The one in the pic below on the surface resembles the on made in India (also sold by Purolator and STP).
On the 2 that I have seen; one had Made In India stamped on the red Paper section of the filter and the other had the Made In India stamped in ink on the metal bottom of the Filter.

Hastings filters have been around for a long time. My father has been using them for 30 years on his MBs.

The above is true but unfortunately these companies are starting to buy stuff from other sources and we do not know that until we purchase it.

Purolator and STP (also well know companies) are both selling what appears to be the same Oil Filter (for 617 Engines) that are made in India.

I bought a Purolator one at Pep Boys for $6 and took it home and opened it up and found that the Central Tube is not connected to anything inside of the Filter (see thumbnail).

Clearly in this case the (ounce) respected company Purolator has not only sent our jobs overseas but has replaced their previous product with an inferior one. Using their "Brand Name" to make suckers of those who buy from them.

I do not know if Hastings is doing this or not. I though Hastings had a connection with Baldwin Filters. If so the Hastings Filter for the Origional Posters Car does not look like the one in the Baldwin Catalog (both the top and bottom of which have pierced metal instead of the lower pierced paper).

Notic how the pic in one of the previous posts of the Hastings Filter resembles the Made in India Filter in the pic below.

The last pic is a Baldwin that has an all metal exterior. This is a good filter. If the origional posters Oil Filter looks like that one it may be the best commercially available Oil Filter for his vehicle.
While Baldwin/Hastings is supposed to be the same company maybe Hastings is buying elsewhere now.

Baldwin does not make a nice filter for the 60x like they do for the 61x.. they are still full of seeds and sticks.

Really? Did you open one?

I used Hastings filters in the 1970s for MB diesels and they were great. I have not looked at one lately but maybe it's worth it to compare them all again.

thanks of the replies

yes, i bought the hastings filter for my 602.
it had the "made in india" stamp on it. it looked to be an inferior product.

i know the filter was not as heavy as the OE mercedes filter that i normally use. it seemed to be a little harder to place it in the oil filter housing.
unfortunately, i did not take any pics.
the other problem was.... the washers supplied with the filter did not fit the drainplug for my diesel.

i went to the dealer today and got the OE filter (11.00) which was cheaper than the hastings (12.95).

thanks for the info and for me i'll stick with OE parts when i decide to do my own work.

I've used hastings filters on some tractors before, don't know that I'd use it on the MB.

Question about the OE filter, is that a Mann filter? If so I found out today that the local NAPA stocks Mann...

Recently bought a purolator but don't have an OEM to compare it to. Haven't gotten round to putting it in and thinking of just ordering up a Mann from the parts store. Nearest stealership is pretty far away, so this would be preferrable.

Take a close look at the NAPA Filter when you get it and see if it is Made in India.

I haven't ordered it yet, but as Kassbohrer specs Mann filters for use in their snowcats, I've been through countless oil/air filters for OM 904 and 924 LA engines and used their hydraulic filters, every one I've used so far has been of good quality and german made afaik.

I'm under the impression that Mann filters are equipped from the factory on some VW and MB vehicles.

Of course that's not to say things haven't changed, or that the filter for a big, expensive off-highway diesel comes from the same factory that a filter for an old, cheap, auto diesel comes from. I'm just gonna order one and see what happens. I'll let everyone know country of origin and final cost in a day or two.

I believe most NAPA filters are WIX.

I haven't used Hastings cartridges, but I have used their spin-on filters on a Dodge Cummins. Once, and only once. The quality was below sub-par, it felt light and thin, and the threads were not machined well. I told the truck owner that for the next oil change either bring a Fleetguard filter or I will get a Fleetguard, I wasn't going to take a chance with another one of these Hastings filters.

I happen to be a fan of WIX filters. If you cut them apart you will see that there is about four times the amount of filtering material in them than in other 'premium' brands.

It depends on what year and model Mercedes. The Wix filter for my 84 300D is an 32 Nominal Micron all Paper Element filter. The Mann and other Euro Companies filters for the same Car; that would answer request of their level of filtrations were in the 22-27 Nominal Micron Range.
So it depends on what year, Vehicle and Engine; Wix Filters for them may be great.

Wix at least publishes the Micron Ratings for most of their filters.

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp

The other companies you have to as for them and some like Bosch will not respond.
