Mercedes tools ... Where to buy?
Hello fine people,
I hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you all a great new year 2010. I wanted to order tools for my W123 300D from Peach Parts. Sadly they do not ship to outside USA. I am in Sydney-Australia and need help with some tools please? Is there any other place? Cheers Fitian <>< |

MB300D81,
I am about 500 miles (800km) south west from you. I have at times been able to borrow tools like that from merc mechs in the local area. I would have thought there would be an independent place some where near you. The local tafe has lots of good tools as well. Its amazing what a slab of beer will get you!!

You could also try the Mercedes car club of NSW or the European car club. Try googleing pages from Australia baum tools or some thing like that.

Confused?
I looked up removal of the what in the US we call the drive Drive Shaft (Propeller Shaft) in the Manual and could find no Slotted Socket For that. There is a Slotted Socket that goes on the Joint Attached to the Differential. There is a slotted Socket that goes on the Rear Wheel Bearing Retainer Ring. Whic one of the below sockets is it? Or is there another one?

The big one in the 2nd pic is the wheel Bearing Sloted Socket.
The one in the first pic is not. I was trying to find out if there is another socket or down under they have different names for the parts of the Car. Here a Drive Shaft is the name for the shaft or Shafts between the Transmission and the Differential. However, while the CV Axles are also Drive Shafts I have not heard of them called that here in the US. So I was curious as the were he would use a Socket on the Drive Shaft. On eBay Zdmak and El Paso Tool both sell Baum Tools (I bought from them and when the package arrived it was from Baum Tools). Also the Glow Plug Reamer I bought from El Paso Tool was made by Baum but cost less then if you bought directly from Baum Tools. There is another company that makes Mercedes Tools called Sir Tool. And, then there is the expensive Samstag that sells them also.

Diesel,
The shaft from the gearbox to the diff is sometimes called the tail-shaft down here. The shafts from the diff to the wheels are sometimes called the drive shafts. I guess he is referring to the wheel bearing tool. At about 400k miles I had bearing noise develop. Didnt have the tool so I drilled a 1/8 hole into the space in the housing between the bearings, threaded the hole, fitted a grease nipple & filled it with grease until old black grease was coming out the seal, bearing noise went & it did 400k miles after that with no probs.

You guys rock.
Thanks for all the replies. It is upsetting that peach parts do not ship outside USA though. I could have ordered all the tools for my diesels from him. They did not even give a reason why they do not ship overseas. Two weeks ago I wanted to replace the auto tranny back oil seal and I had to get that nutched nut out. It holds the flange where the flex disc mounts. I bought the seal together with a 30mm star nut to replace the notched nut. I could not remove the notched nut "did not have the tool" so I drilled tiny hole in the body of the nut and cracked it and it came off. I could not wait until I get the right tool as the oil seal was leaking badly and it had to be replaced. Now I need the tool to keep for my other car and in case I need to work on the other end of the tail shaft "drive shaft". I will try mercedes source and will report back. Thanks you all Have a happy new year 2010 Fitian <>< Last edited by MB300D81; 12-28-2009 at 05:42 AM. |
