A 240 D blew my doors off !!???

I was going to get on to IH 37 going to san antonio I was driving the wifes toyota up ahead was a plum colored 240 D . The wifes reaction was theres the same car as yours you might want to switch lanes and go around it . So I switched lanes . ( because spouses are always right ) Heres where the unbeleivable part happens the mercedes starts picking up speed and stays beside me ! What the ...... so I start to accelerate move over one more lane look in the mirror and theres a mercedes badge on my rear bumper. By now me and the wife are laughing uncontrollably I look at the speedometer and were going 70 I move over and the mercedes blows past me .

How is this possible its a 240 D for god sakes !!! I try to keep up but before long you can barely see the tail lights. No smoke either ! Possibly rebadged ? Gas engine swap ??

If your a member and read this please explain whats going on under the hood . That car sure exceeded my expectations. Good shape as well .

Probably had a turbo 617 in it and not the original non turbo 616. I can pull 70 EASY on the highway in my wagon, thats actually where she it most comfortable on the highway. I've had it up to 90 on the flat open road. I know others can beat that, but I had two bicycles on top of the car. Don't tell my wife that her $1200 bike was on the roof!

I agree. Probably a 280E driver with a warped sense of humor.

So, 70 mph is all your 240D at home will do? LOL! 70 is nothing for a 240D. My Dad owned two coming up in the '70s. They were just getting wound up at 70.

Mine will run about 85 without sounding like it wants out. The excelleration part was what amazed me. At 70 he stepped on it and actually got it to move faster as in passing another car faster . Not that mine will not pass another car but at 70 she almost has to be going down hill to compete with what passed me today.

If it's a 240D original body with a turbo 617 engine then I can tell you that's a fast car with a 3.69 rear end. Only drawback would be top end and the noise which would be very loud since the 3.69 is letting the engine run at higher RPM.

Once upon a time my 300D had a 3.69 rear end...

How many exhaust pipes did it have? May have been a 280 or even a V8.
May have had the trunk lid replaced, but the badge left.

Based on the OP description, I have a hunch that "240D" badged 123 may not have an OM in it.... even a 617.952 geared lower should still be slower when compared to a newer Toyota 4runner. My '03 RAV4 can blow away my turbodiesel...

I agree with that - a 3.69 differential does indeed mean a lot of noise at about 80mph - 130 kph... but then I need to buy some new door seals to stop the wind in my hair.

it was probably a euro w116 6.9 amg, with a 240d badge on it. in the dark, you can't tell it's a different chassis
