Gotta love it...
22F this morning at 8:00 am. Hit the switch on Marlene the wonder wagon (who sat outside next to the barn all night), left it on 15-20 sec after the glow light went out and she fired off after cranking about 15 sec. Rough idle for 10-15 sec and after that, it was business as usual.
315,000+ miles and still running strong.

That's not that good....my 300SD fired off at 15F this morning in about 2 seconds of cranking (maybe about 2-3 rotations of the engine) with maybe a 15 second glow cycle....no rough idle either. 287k on it....I drive it about 450 miles a week.

Not to take anything away from the original poster and please understand I just changed all 6 of the glow plugs. I'm just saying is all. It was 19F when I left the office tonight. I sort of got busy and forgot I wanted to leave before the guys with BIG trucks had left. Coda wasn't started at lunch, today. It was a cloudy, windy, cold all day. I turned the key to glow....thought about double glowing....but as soon as the glow plug indicator went out, I bumped the starter (hard habit to break, huh?). It seemed like I was starting her in the middle of summer......this car starts so easily.
These old diesels are GREAT, aren't they?

The extra glow was 'on principle.' It is the way she is...I've owned and driven this car for 6+ years. All those GP are working..because I know without a doubt she wouldn't start with at 22F with one bad GP since she won't start at 35F with one bad GP.

Tomorrow morning it is supposed to be 3F here....coldest yet. Might not even need to start it though as tomorrow is gasser-maintenance day.....oil change, inspection, etc.

3 degrees !! Its been in the 20 - 30's down here and the news is issuing freeze warnings ! They warned us to stay inside if at all possible and limit our exposure if we must go out ! Hell I was so scared I ran outside tried starting my car it wouldn't start ran back inside and will try again as soon as its safe. No sense endangering my health for an impossible mission. Gotta love it !!

5F Wichita, KS - spent the night at a motel on the way to Omaha, NE. My '83 300SD with 120K miles on it at the time. Cycled the glow plugs twice - after the second cycle cranked it while holding foot feed flat to the floor. Yes it started, much to my surprise. I got a block heater installed soon after.

I had a rough start one day and poor benzy died with a coughing rough start.
I thought it was a glow plug and I checked the resistance. No glow plug problems. Well the rough idle went away. She starts up as usual, but sometimes hesitates a bit. I'm wonder if she has low compression in one cylinder. Either way I need a valve adjustment! It's been a major plus that I can garage her now too. I've been pressure washing off the slush and boy I love driving around with a relatively clean car when everyone elses looks like crap! Edit: She rolled the odometer on me at 340,000! I'm worried how much life she has left in her. I want to at least kick this girl around until 500,000!

When I was in Carson City, NV last month, it was 15 deg in the morning, think this was Dec 21. turned the key, waited for the relay to click, turned key, and fired right up. no stumbling.
This afternoon we were down to 58 deg., turned key and started engine as soon as the light turned off. kicked right over . this was in santa Cruz by the way, might get to 60 tomarrow. Charlie
