electric motor sound near the rear view mirror in a E300D

Can anyone tell me what the electric motor sound coming from the rear view mirror area is? When the car is started it going at a higher rpm but then quiets down abit.

Secondly, where is the antenna in this car?

Lastly can someone tell me if the front cigar lighter has its own fuse? Mine is out and wanted to check before purchasing a new one.

I just purchased this car and within the first week an error code comes up and I have to change out the Glow Plugs which I will be doing this weekend followed by the excellent instructions from this forum.

What year is your E300D? Much depends on that important piece of information.

The sound you hear may be part of the system that re-aims the mirror and adjusts the seat and the steering column for individual drivers.

The radio antenna may be built into the rear window.

The lighter socket is usually on a fuse with other accessories. It all depends on what year (and therefore the model) of your E300D. Could be either a 124 or a 210, I think.

It's probably the climate control system sampling the air to get a temperature reading. The pump is behind the glove box and it pulls air through the little black nub next to the rear-view mirror.

You can put your ear up to it and verify this.

As you've read, be VERY careful with the GP's! It's a great car, enjoy it!

When I first purchased my E300, I did also notice this hum/whine noise from the same area. I took that cluster out, and saw the little fan covered with dust. I blasted it with compressed air to clean it out. It helped the noise for a little bit, but I believe I ended up replacing it.
