I dont know if this is typical but in the past I have had to do a 2 amp charge overnight on my battery every couple of months to keep it conditioned.

That is not normal. Alternator should put out approx 14V. Battery should hold 12.6 overnight. You may have a drain or bad battery. Parts store will load test the battery. Lots of info available on measuring & tracking down a parasitic drain.
