I got tired of all dang old vacuum stuff giving me trouble, so I ripped it all out and threw it away.
Well actually, I replaced the automatic transmission with a 4-speed manual from a 83 240D last April. so then most of the vac isn`t needed. really cleaned up the engine compartment. this is on my 85 300d cali. since I simplified the Vacuum, I simplified the VC linkage. 79 W116 Valve Cover Linkage on 85 W123 VC Charlie

Only problem is that the orifice of the vacuum lines are so small compared to the outer diameter of the filters, that it's a royal PITA to install just one. I just looked at photos of my setup and it seems to be setup that way. If you follow the direction of the arrows to denote direction of vacuum flow, then it's setup to allow oil to pool in the filter. I do have the clear ones, which makes it easier to see.

I imagine a filter of any type in a vacuum circuit would act as a resevoir and delay or eliminate function of whatever system it was a part of. i.e: slow shutdowns and messed up shift patterns.

Vacuum reservoirs are a NULL/zero factor to function, they are there to even out high demand that momentarily exceeds vacuum pump supply, and supply vacuum for functions after engine shutdown. Total volume of the fuel filter is = to a single climate control or door lock vacuum actuator, but with no risk of leak. |

I agree, I just want to see what's in there, not just in knowing that oil may have leaked...

The same rubber vacuum hose that fits over the OE plastic lines also slipped over the 1/4" ends of the filter with the little encouragement from dishwashing liquid.
