I love it when life proves me wrong. There's only one 300SDL on ebay at the moment and it has the skinny cap. Mine may well be the replacement. We're probably a thread derailment at this point until somebody comes up with one that they know for a fact is original to the car.

Maybe mine WAS replaced by a previous owner.
