So here's another question, even if this was a pre-85 engine, could I add this switch to it? Would it still function?

Also, on a side note, this car is starting to scare me. I wish I could know the history of it. I have no clue if it's engine is even the one it is supposed to have. Or if the mileage is accurate or anything.

Thanks,
David

You can add in the sensor. You should be able to remove the plug on the head and thread it in.

To determine if you don't have an original engine, you can run your VIN on the russian vin decoder site.

http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

It will show the engine ID/serial number. You would then compare that number to the one that is located on the block, which is in hiding between the Oil Filter housing and engine block. You might need to clean the area very well in order to see.

As long as your engine has good compression and is running with good power, you should be OK no matter how many miles are on it.

Davidd, the pictures you posted, I think your engine, or the Injection Pump is a 85. the box under your plug that is on the back of the IP is only on the 84 and 85 models.
Deliveryvalve`s pictures also show it. there is a large cable attached to it. That is your rack positioner sensor. has nothing to do with your original question, just a clue it is a 85.

If you do have a 85, the tach pick up is connected to the engine adapter plate on the drivers side, picks up a signal from the flywheel teeth.

KERRY, that wire isn`t large enough for the IP component. plus the wire is attached inside it and doesn`t plug into it.
