Where to put jack
Good Evening,
I have been putting the jack under the differential to lift up the rear end. I am getting ready to do some work in that area in the next few days, and I thought, could this damage the differential? And what about the front to. I usually have to do one side at a time by putting the jack close to the front wheel. Hugh Sr 1984 190d (W201) |

The differential is a good place to jack up the rear and if you use a piece of wood on the jack it will keep anything from getting damaged.
Most people find that using the engine cross brace just behind the lower oil pan to be the best place to jack up the front. Again, use a piece of wood. |

I usually use the factory jack inserted into the factory jack holes (that sounds dirty, doesn't it?). If using a floor jack, the differential or a flatter spot on either of the rear trailing arms works. Using a floor jack in front, I think I would try to get on the control arms underneath the spring cups.

So, I shouldn't be using the nice flat surfaces on the oil pan and gas tank?

That is an idea. Go ahead and try it. Let us know how it works.
