Hi Everyone,
Our prized '87 wagon is spitting out engine oil constantly, from a couple of different places near as my mechanic can tell. I don't have the skills to work on a problem that big...he's telling me that a new engine is in order. Yikes! Any suggestions? Anyone interested in buying it who wants to do something with this car? Bodywork, chassis, interior, all immaculate. WVO system works flawlessly with custom tank, willing to part with it for the right happy home.....we are very unhappy right now! thanks for your input. C

Lots of rogue-ness in that sig!!!
Lots of folks really covet the '87 TD (one T only please) Stating your location may help, along with a more specific detail on the oil situation....

"spitting out oil" doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem, unless it's coming from the tailpipe or a hole in the block. More specifics?

Could be a close correlation between those two things. Your WVO may not be working as flawlessly as you think. Do a search on water injection for loosening stuck rings caused by use of WVO. I think member Alistair has posted on this topic. It sounds like you have high crankcase pressure which could be caused by stuck rings.

more specifics on oil
thanks, all, for your input. And yes, corrected...1 "T" only! This started with finding the oil level low repeatedly, and some oil gathering on the ground. This was after a recent oil change. I started adding oil. Then it appeared to need oil constantly, and one time the oil pressure light actually came on (hey, it works!). I needed to add 5 quarts. Kept driving OK for a while, then left me stranded on the side of the highway - had to pull over because of massive smoke coming from under hood. After it cooled off, I added lots of oil, about 6 quarts (since I was carrying a lot with me after earlier level drops!), and limped the car carefully to my mechanic, who happened to be just another 7 miles down the road. The oil pressure light came on just as I pulled into his forecourt. I thought it was a poor dipstick seal earlier on, but by this point it was spraying oil - there was oil EVERYWHERE. Mechanic steam-cleaned the engine compartment and is still finding leaks. He's already dumped some stuff in there to test for WVO causing the rings to stick (thanks for that, you were right to flag it!!), and determined that this isn't the problem. I'm still awaiting results of leakdown and compression tests, but I'm nervous....

If you were driving on the highway 6 quarts low, chances are it's toast.
But my next question: How much? I could use a wagon that matches our GSD.

I'll have a final consult with my mechanic tomorrow or the next day, and then I'll know if we can afford to repair/replace the engine. If it's a no go, let me caucus with the wife (it's her car) and see how much we can let it go for. We may sell it complete with WVO system and the custom tank (it's beautiful, trust me!!), but I'm not certain yet. Stay tuned!!

Why would anyone want to use WVO, it killed your engine. Prime example.

statement without proof.
Stupid statement as you have no proof what killed his engine. Unless of course, you have torn it down already and analyzed it and forgot to mention that.

WVO causes rings to stick with extended use. I have seen this happen many times before.

There are three of us circling so far, ... but we really do hope it's repairable.
