Post Multiple Q's # 2

No;

I just deal with things as they come up ~ in decades past someone would have gone to the Hospital and me maybe back to jail, I'm mostly calmer now .

That Shop is closed in any case . one of the mechanics there tried to steal the under engine bash plates ~ I looked underneath it and asked in front of the Boss " where are they ? " and he looked sheepihs and they were right there inside the main garage door ~ he said " they were bent so i didn't think you'd want them back on this beautiful Wagon " .

I bought the car with these bogus Phenolic piston calipers ~ the P.O. had $pent a fortune in repairs with a different shop I've never traded with .

I was driving it in the rain down hill into a steel security gate @ L.A.P.D. when the brake pedal went to the floor, I'm *very* glad SWMBO wasn't driving it as she might have panicked and wrecked it .

I just put in another 9 hour shift and carefully drove it home, put it up on safety stands and began to work on it ~ the host here jerked me off for a MONTH before sending me a Chinese copy of the correct ATE left caliper (I do all brake repairs in axle sets) ~ I was NOT HAPPY to say the least ~ if they'd have asked I'da gone and taken a used ATE brand caliper off in the Junk yard TEN MILES AWAY and had them send it out for rebuilding but in the end it's working fine (I also replaced the MC on principle) and I have both original ATE calipers I may send out for rebuilding and keeping as spares .

The Wagon is and has been, up and running all along ~ it's SWMBO's car (I bought it specifically for her, I don't like Wagons much) it's a nice little car everyone always asks her to sell, only 140,000 miles on it more or less .
Thank you for listening to my rants mixed in with the Tech Help .

Did you file a police report and small claims?

Reads like she will not be done with it any time soon, unless you find an even better replacement.

Sounds like you're a good friend Koop ! .

Maybe they'll sell it to you when they're done with it.....

I tried many times to help others get good cars cheap, they almost always trashed them and then tried to blame me so I stopped .

As an Old Vehicle Enthusiast (to - day the young guy @ the Vintage VW partshaus called me a nutter ) and a Farm Boy born and raised, I hate waste of any sort .

The white Euro Wagon I *think* got scrapped was just one more old Mercedes in The Ghetto....trust me there's still scads of them all over So. Cal., you just have to get out and LOOK for them .

I've bought many a fine if neglected and/or unwanted vehicle out of Junk yards .

Yes, the tool I was referring to is called a Mechanical Foot or Mechanic's Helper and is an adjustable stick usually one end has a rubber pad like a crutch and the other end often has a 'U' shape to hold the steering wheel's spokes or the edge of the seat .

You used a flywheel, I used to use whatever was handy : cores mostly, cylinder heads, starters, generators ~ whatever was heavy enough to not roll / slip off .

My Euro Wagon doesn't have ABS .

The SLS tank has a plastic ring, you can use some LARGE Water Pump (NE: Channel Lock) Pliers wrapped in thick cloth or leather scrap to turn as you hold the return pipe with your hand to prevent damaging/kinking it .

The pipe unscrews with a " Flare Nut Wrench " ~ i suggest getting a good qual;ity used one from the Pawn Shop or wherever, I don't recall the proper size at this moment but DO NOT EVER attempt to loosen any hydraulic or Banjo fitting with regular tools as heartache will inevitably result .

Nate, I have found the Peach fairly helpful, but Tram more so, though have to remember he owns his own restoration and repair shop, putting in probably 80 hours a week.

My ancestors were Mennonite farmers and farmers, so the former could pinch pennies until they screamed. I used to not be able to throw things away, but for a while was thinking to toss stuff, but now have it stored in the wrecked '85 300TD-T.

No such. Further, you said no Euro wagons left in Southern California.

I looked for two weeks and never found a wagon under $5,000. If could find a wagon, especially a diesel Euro needing an engine, be real tempted.

Side note: If you ever find a good rear driver corner behind the wheel, please let me know. Now know two that went to the crusher.

Could use other parts, but that piece of sheet metal is the hardest.

I was told can't buy vehicals out of junk yards because of California and Arizona regulations.

The hardwood, it seems, 1x2 is just a tad too long, but wow, it is just what was needed. So much easier and got a lot of progress on the front. Front left so bubbled it comes out as goo, almost looks like dog semen (dogs have dreams that I don't have so don't know about myself). Left it to go to my M.R.I. and also hoping the small bubbles clear up and get clear fluid on the front (rears fine).

I feel a bit insulted, but think a miscommunication. I told you what the issue was: rusted solid S.L.S. hydraulic fittings. Would you like a video?

For your information, I replaced an S.L.S. damper (other recently prior by Tram) a few years ago. Back then, had to open the tank. Did the same on the '79 when parting out.

Actually known to use flare wrenches since High School auto shop. When I got the Mercedes, bought a set of quality (don't trust Chinese tools, even if Craftsman as my hands are worth more (taught by auto shop teacher)). Only one that don't have are a 16mm and a 18mm.

Even with a flare, can chew up a fitting. The left rear line on the caliper was frozen solid, no heat or penetrant helped. Decided not have it cause me trouble in the future, so pulled the hard brake line from the '85 300TD-T and never looked back.

Nate, a shop in Pacific Beach tried to go over the estimate, was just for a rear brake drum issue. So paid what the estimate was, despite a vey obese fellow trying to pin me in a corner of the office. Later when the wrong hardware let go and froze the shoes onto the drum, towed it back and had the same fellow fix it with new hardware he provided, under my close supervision while I scolded him. Never asked for any money then. Wish had known when the other shop ripped me off $575.

I never hit anyone, but now more willing to let things go. But tonight when told because the hospital messed up payment for the M.R.I. that have to waste the two hour round trip and go home, negotiated for 45 minutes. I can't intimidate as skinny as a bean pole, but getting better at talking.

Nine hour shift at L.A.P.D? Extrapolate, please?

I rebuilt the front calipers myself, it it real easy and most likely more than what they do. Just need some 1000 grit sandpaper to take out any pits. Of course if the honing is gone for some reason, then yes, no good. The rebuild kits are far less than purchasing a rebuilt unit, especially if now made in China.

Big thing is do not split the halves, as those seals not available and one time use.

Trick I did was pull the caliper, while hanging from the brake hose replacing anyway, go in and stomp the brake pedal. No compressed air needed. Rears be easier as the rotor slips off and no fiddly adjustments to mess with.

I didn't get that bought for her, based on prior comments. That just further proves my point.

I wouldn't be talking to you if you were not providing some kind of benefit.

See ;

This is what happens with overly long multiple Q. threads .

PLENTY of W123 Wagons here in So. Cal. even a fair amount of Diesel ones .

What I said was : the gasser versions mostly got scrapped by now .

Always some outliers so never stop beating those bushes ! .

I worked for L.A.P.D. for 32 years .

Civilians work 9 hour shifts, Sworn works the 4/10 setup ~ I didn't like that although some of the Welders did .

I'm tired, time to try and sleep

Nate, you are the one that did the two separate threads.

But not for sale, right? Have not seen them on Craigslist.

I didn't think diesel wagons were all that common in Europe?

I wish I could have gone to bed at my usual eight to nine time. But my incontinent dog in both departments messed up the bed, again. She just wanted to be on my side of the bed despite none of my scent as just washed less than 18 hours earlier. Thankfully only affected four out of eight layers of bedding and got the drier to work.

They have 3-16 year-old girls to teach drive, I don't think this one's going to fare so well in the long run. But it will keep those kids safe.

The car came out of a small Benz restoration shop in Southern California. The owner of the shop restored this wagon to a ridiculously high standard for himself. I can't believe I didn't buy it... I get to see it drive by my house every day though.

Post Euro Wagons

they are out there Koooop ~

Mine looked scruffy on the outside when I went to look at it and the engine was very dirty but all the dirt was _dry_ and looked to be from when the car was new, the tech decals were still intact and all those cute little white bio-degradeable plastic clips were also intact so I ignored the smashed headlight and dented RF fender etc. , bought it and haven't regretted the $ invested even though I'm not a Wagon guy .

If you truly want one keep beating those bushes .

Who knows ? the Girls may say ' I wouldn't be caught dead driving that thing ! ' so it might come up for sale sooner than you think ~ I've seen several pristine 240D's come on the market exactly this way .

Good that staying in the family, seriously.

But, funny side says, gives me time to save my pennies.

I am not trying to hijack this thread, but it seems the perfect place to put this........
On another forum I frequent there is a guy putting a 240TD motor and transmission in a ford ranger. Car looks to have lots of good parts. He has had no interest in it and is about to scrap car.
It is a thousand miles too far away from me.....

Darn!

Even has the headlight wipers!

Seriously, if had the $1,500, I get it hauled out here. I put the wrecked 300TD-T driveline in and get her back on the road.
