The 1979 has the simple diaphram pump. I believe you can almost always rebuild it. Sounds like the garage is charging you for a new one instead.

Funny the vacuum pump is bad when your other vacuum functions were working well.

I rebuilt a diaphragm vacuum pump in less than 2 hours in the dead of winter and that included removing it from the engine and reinstalling. And given your symptoms it sounds like an intermittent failure in a check valve on the pump and not the whole pump itself.

In the end, the vacuum pump went and sent oil into the brake booster. It was quite a mess. It also triggered a larger drain on the check book as my wife got the 2002 C320 wagon she wanted (and it now very happy) and I'll be driving this mint '79 300D. I have to admit, it is pretty fun to drive.

Looks like I'm selling my "truck"...aka my '85 wagon. -Harv
