MB 229.3 & 229.31 == Confused

I am confused about the MB oil specifications for my 1993 602.962 and hope you guys can set me straight.

Do the MB specs 229.3 and 229.31 also apply to my vehicle or only MB 228.3 and 228.31?

Thanks.

Whatcher trying to run in it?

Best choices:
Red Line
Royal Purple
Amsoil

Alternates:
Delvac 1
Mobil 1 5W40 TTD

To be treated as if non synthetic ( 2,500-3,000 miles):
Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic

A lot of the "Newer" oil formulations (Spelled MOBIL) have additive packages
specific to ULSD ,Shy away from them.

Almost any CF4 rated oil will be O.K.

I am wondering if Mobil 1 0W40 is certified for my engine. It is not 228.3 or 228.31 certified. It is 229.3 and 229.31.

BUT, Mobil says I can use it (along with their M1 15w50 syn oil).

So my question is 229.3 and 229.31 backwards compatible with 228.3 and 228.31?

I think only the Mobil varieties above are MB certified???

The .31 and .51 are low SAPS, so they are low Zn, P, etc. No big issue. The CJ-4 and ULSD formulated oils are proving to be superior in performance regardless.

Using a 229.31 oil would be perfect. However, frankly, Id just go with the HDEO of your choice and be done with it. I prefer a diesel-specific add pack, and that is something that API CF and in reality 229.xx wont give you.

WRONG. The advanced add packs are for emissions equipment protection, not ULSD per se. At the end of the day, even if the newer oils have lower starting TBN, they have vastly better TBN retention.

Frankly royal purple is unproven in any way shape or form, it just is hype. More or less the same for redline, buy VOA and UOA show that it does have a neat add pack.

Amsoil and Delvac 1 are proven players, and rotella syn should NOT be treated like it is a non-syn, as there is NO chemical basis for that claim. Just wife's tales and people thinking they are smart shoppers chasing some "value proposition" that is backwards and wrong.

Oils and in particular the add packs have come a LONG way since CF4, and there is significant benefit to be had.

The ONLY place where high Zn is smart is in flat tappet cam systems. There, Zn shows better wear protection than other adds. For any other application, Zn is obsolete. So are we worrying about flat tappet cams here? If so, then we need to follow Zn levels, if not, then we do not.

Your Engine's lifeblood

NO,No,No 0W20 - 0W30 - 0W40 oils in Diesels,unless Arctic Conditions.
(Questions ?,Call RCMP in Alert and ask what they run in the Winter.)

('Don't care WHAT the Noodleheads @ Exxon/Mobil said!)

In Raleigh the Lowest viscosity ,in the dead of Winter would be 5W40.

AND unless you have excessive Wear on your engine 15W40 in Summer.

Actually 5W40 can be used year round in your climactic conditions.
(Less clutter in the Garage)

The Only class IV synthetics Mobil still produces [That apply to Diesels]are
Delvac 1 and the Mobil 1 5W40 TTD.

Do you realize that at normal ambient temperatures, a 0w-40 oil can actually be more viscous than a 5w-40?!?

The 0w- part is a cranking spec at -35C. Look at the viscosities at 40C for something more relevant. Not always a lot of difference at 40C from a 0w- to a 15w-.

And a group IV doesnt do anything in terms of lube performance outside of conditions when it truly is -35C.
