Got it. Thanks so much. I am replacing every piece of rubber back there. Everything is on order and should be in on Wednesday, so I am looking forward to doing it and getting this ole girl on the road again. I found out today that Landal Sanders works in the parts dept of Mercedes of Nashville. My Dad did business with he and his Dad Carl at Roy Rogers Import Auto parts for 25 years. My Dad was a VW..aholic...until his death last year. I will pick up the Citrus degreaser tomorrow. That is going to be one nasty car wash when I get done cleaning out that tank over there...LOL.
I need to name her (the car) any suggestions anyone? Scott |

I can not remember the size right now, BUt the cheapest way to make a tank strainer remover is to buy a METRIC bolt large and a nut...
The bolt or the nut can be inserted inside the strainer and with the nut welded on the other end just put a socket on it and violla!

Here we go. I pulled the tank, cleaned it out. Cleaned the fuel lines with mineral spirits. Replaced the screen, all fuel lines and filters and the primer pump. She started right up, coughed and spit and then evened out. Yes!!!!! Pictured are a few of the issues I found. Picture one is the fuel tank screen, picture two is the gook that came out of the filler neck of the tank, and picture three is a fuel line that runs to the screen that had a crimp in it. The ugly?? The gas tank is now leaking, and I can't tell where it is coming from. Any suggestions? I guess I will pull the tank again, and see if I can get it tested. Scott

If you only worked on the tank screen, I would suspect the leak is in that area. Item #53 is an "O" ring, did you install a new one?

Yep. I sure did. I am going to go out in a bit and remove the tank again. Crazy huh? It appears as though it is leaking at the bottom somewhere and spilling into the trunk.

Check the seal around the fuel cap.

Still having some issues.
Yep, the filler cap and seal is good. I have the tank out now. I reinstalled the screen and the "O" ring and tightened it with a big pipe wrench and used plumbers tape on the threads this time. The gasket that goes on the passenger side at the bottom of the tank had slipped when I put the tank in last time and that is why I ended up with a trunk full of diesel fuel. I have cleaned that gasket and I will ensure that it dries well before I try to put the tank back in again. Maybe I didn't get the screen in tight enough (I thought I did) and the diesel fuel was trickling out and running along the bottom of the tank to the drivers side and pooling up there. The Vapor line and return line were dry, so I know that those lines were on there good. Do you guys think this may be it?

She lives!!! No leaks No drips, no errors! There was a pin hole in the fuel tank. My wife and I put 3 coats of wax on her and did a shampoo job on the carpets. She is by no means perfect, but she runs. Thank you all so much for all of the advice! I could not have done it without you, Scott
