you said there were other pictures of the car.
post them here also, we can glean a lot from looking at pictures too.
but when you go, focus on the condition of the steering wheel. it's hard to swap, but not impossible.
it should show deep grain all around. not a polished spot on it at that low mileage.
6K is quite a bit. unles it is a a TD with all options.

Looks like a typical speedo with a bleached out needle. They were more orange from the factory.

MB odometers from this period sucked, they break all the time. You have to look at the whole car to see if the mileage match's up. Also look at all the guages. A lot of times if people swap out the speedo the needle will look different from the rest.

Yep. Only pay extra for low mileage based on comprehensive records supporting the mileage claims.

I guess I learned something new today. I have a 1981 300D with 130k miles on it, 100% original, and 100% garaged since 1981 - the tenths on the trip odo is brown just like stated above. Never noticed that.

Unfortunately, yes. This is why I have three 123's with black interior - when they come along I can't pass them up!

Brian,

That's a lot of miles to drive in a garage!

My settlement is due to arrive this week, and I'm chomping at the bit. I miss the smell, sound, and sheer awesomeness of the W123 diesel.

Anyway, I found something interesting, if overpriced, on Craigslist this morning, and I wanted you guys to have a look at this picture of the odometer. Looks fishy to me, and Carfax was no help. Shouldn't the numbers line up? Unless the guy has service records, I'd walk anyway, but I'd love a few opinions before I bother making contact.
If your concern about it, then do a car fax on it.

It could have been rebuilt too. I got the odometer rebuilt on my 124 last summer when it stopped due to the odometer shaft slipping out of it's holder. I had a speedo shop rebuild it and they either put in new wheels or cleaned them up really well since I've never seen a tenths digit that white

The mileage was less than 30 miles higher when I got it back, probably added when they calibrated it. The speedometer is dead on accurate now. It actually worked out OK since I drove about 30 miles using my GPS as a speedometer
