I just bought a 1984 300SD and want to fix a few things. First is to get the speedometer working but I can not find a replacement cable online. Is it an electronic sensor? If so, what is it called?

but it might also be the speedometer its self. someone who has done this before may chime in with how to trouble shoot this for ya. I haven't had this problem yet.

I also did some quick reading around the inter-webs, and it seems that if your odometer is working but not the speedometer its the speedometer gage its self and you should replace the whole thing, best bet for that is the junk yard. if your speedometer works but the Odometer is out, thats the mechanical gears that can be replaced on the back of the speedometer. if both are not working then look to the sending unit.

Yeah, both are not working plus the cruise control, another indicator that it's the sensor, but why can I not find them listed anywhere, I think I'm using the wrong key words or something.

I thought that first link i posted worked... sorry about that. its working for me so maybe its because i searched it... its listed as the "Speedometer Impulse Sender" at AllPartsExpress under the "buy parts" at the top of this page.

I searched a few other parts houses (including fastlane) hoping to get you the part number, but I can't find that listed anywhere, I see the trouble you are having now

I searched the EPC for ya hoping to find a part number, but no luck. very odd! maybe call the guys at AllPartsExpress just to verify you are getting the correct part. something smells fishy about all of this. Good luck!

This is interesting. All Parts express lists "Spedometer Impulse Sender" MBZ083634 for the 84SD. $57.64
also list it for the 84 300D, which has the mechanical spedo.
does list under the item "cruise control/spedo". maybe does both functions in the SD.

Over in Fast Lane lists no Spedo Impulse Sender for the SD, but lists the "RPM Sensor" W0133-1615020 $68.63. also for the 300D.

they look identical.

Charlie thats what I was thinking, thats why i went to the EPC, but i can't seem to find any sending unit listed for the speedo. there are speed senders listed, but as part of the ABS system... which i thought was an option... anyway, now I want to know how it gets that signal. it has to be getting it from the output side of the transmission.

I'm still looking without sucess, might have to break down and go to the dealer.

Report back what you find. I've never had this kind of problem finding a part, there must be some "trick" to it... or it works completely different then how we are all thinking.
