Crazy Ray's Stinks!

I drove out to Mt. Airy today thinking I could get a bunch of relays and connectors for a couple projects I have on going. I pulled a relay box and some of the harness out of a Pathfinder (victim of the Cash for Clunkers program). I said "see ya" when the troll at the desk wanted to charge me $16 for the box and $6 each for the relays. Instead I ordered what I wanted from All Electronics for $2.40 a relay and $2.00 a socket. I guess they figure Napa sells them for $12.00 each, so they can get half that for electric items of unknown and non-guaranteed functionality. As if.

I guarantee that they won't get $64.00 for it now - it'll get tossed into one of the other junkers and get crushed and shredded for pennies.

And to keep things diesel related, there was at least one 85 300D there mostly intact.

There are bunch of yard around here, that want to know exactly which car you want parts off of, and exactly which parts you want, and don't you even think of taking parts off without asking about them first. Then when you go to pay get ready to bend over. It's ridiculous. I never go to those yards. I should be able to walk into a yard and pick and pull what ever I want and they have a look at the stuff I bring in and say, "mmmm $15". And I say, "Good deal" and pay up.

luckily i live in an area where cars and customers are so abundant they'd rather cut me a deal than bend me over. so my experience is the exact opposite at jy's--i get 'crazy' deals

Door vacuum Actuator

I bought 3 Door Vacuum Actuators at a PNP in Carson City, NV. was charged $1.99 ea.

I bought one in Moss Landing, Ca. and was charged $12.99

The item Description on both are the same

804
Misc mech vac actuator.

Now it would seem the Pick N Pulls would have the same price for the same part at all their yards. I know, it costs more to live in Calif., but come on now, not that much more.

next time I go to one of the San Jose yards, I`ll see what their price is.

What's the beat approach?

Find out the price first or argue with them on the way out. A couple of times I asked for a price, went in and was charged less then the amount quoted, and I have not been charged more then quoted. That is not too bad.

I've generally been satisfied with Crazy Rays, but there are a few occasions when I've been stuck. Sounds like you were today. It sometimes makes a difference who is at the gate, or who is standing behind whoever is at the gate. The place is great for things like fenders, hoods, grills, transfer cases ($63), complete CV joint axle ($26), etc . . . where there is little discretion on how much they can charge. Get into things like wiring harnesses (such as I did when retrofitting in a passenger airbag), relays, and complete engines and it pays to wait until the right person is at the gate or you might get nickled and dimed to excess. Wiring harnesses are $6 @ foot. Mine, on one particular day, worked out to be only one foot long. I've gotten several Euro warning triangles for only $3 each which is an absolute steal, but today got stuck for $5 for a very small trim piece that should have been a freeby (which I have gotten a few times). Generally speaking, I absolutely would not be playing around with as many MBs as I have today were it not for the 5 Crazy Rays within a reasonable driving distance. It can be a blessing, or a necessary evil - just plan accordingly.

I've pretty much always been treated fairly by the LKQs in West Michigan, ... which BTW just got a running 240D / '72 in the Dorr (GR) yard.

I've definitely gotten lots of deals. You just have to know where to go around here.

I bet none of you got an M-pump for $9.95.

They called me about it last Sat, said it died in the lot, should be in the yard in a week or so (now?). Had some rust issues, thinks it's an automatic, isn't '72 the stamped-aluminum wheel year?

Give me a call next time you go. I think they could let the guy at the window loose in the yard at night. He was about as surly as any junkyard dog I've ever seen!

I am a fan of Crazy Rays==at least to this extent...
If you buy something listed on their price list you know the price before you pull the part. The price does not vary based on the car. IOW a seat for a Yugo costs the same as the seat for a MB, or a Jeep, or a Ford, or a caddy.
Too many yards seem to "size you up" before they give a price, and MB parts definitely command a premium. The guy at B&K (?) up in Elkton is like that--I refuse to go as the price is never consistent, and always too high.

Where Crazy Rays can get you is on those miscellaneous electrical and trim parts.

You guys get volume discounts, no doubt. I want to go with you once I get through working on this house and can once again think about car-related things.

I picked up a framed rag top with intact windows and new seals in very good condition for my R107 for $50!! It's real hard to beat a deal like that. It saved me a ton of money on my 280SL restoration project. BTW - those windows are nice and soft and will polish up nicely.
