What the heck is an anniversary edition W123?

I keep finding all kinds of odd things in my obsessive car search.

I've never heard of an "anniversary edition" W123, and could not find much information on it.

I am not sure how I feel about it, but I think it's a bit too bling for my taste. Check out the chrome above the wheel wells--I thought that only ever came on the coupes. And what's up with the sunroof? What is that bubble thing?

This is only the second turbodiesel I've found with matching hubbies. Maybe this was one of the anniversary options?

I've never heard of it. the bubble thing on the sun roof and the chrome wheel arches are both after-market equipment. I'm guessing the "anniversary edition" lettering is also an after market touch... that being said, looking at the car in the ebay link, it looks very clean, maybe the all the extras were added by the dealer?

I found a source for a "Limited Edition" kit.

There's no such thing as an anniversary edition W123. Those are all owner added accessories.

Here's what I think

If you look around a P & P long enough, you will eventually find some piece of domestic auto, most likely GM, that was all gussied up as an "Anniversary Model". Could be Ford or Chrysler too. There you will find inside the car, probably inside both front doors, those little plastic strips. Guaranteed Mercedes Benz would never put something like that straight little strip in a curved piece of trim, Never happen!

Holy crap, Chad! I never would have guessed something like that existed. Now that I look at the lettering on the plaque, though, it kind of looks like something you'd see on an 1980s American luxury car.

Talk about gilding the lily. If they did add all that aftermarket stuff, they went one step way over the line with the plaque. The sunroof "guard thing" looks too sporty as well. I wonder if it has any function other than looks?

I guess bling truly knows no bounds!

I've seen plenty of those sunroof air dams with the MB logo. I guess they were a dealer option. They decrease wind noise with the sunroof.

The wheel arches are a good trap for moisture and dier which = Rust under them. I also think the rust starts from where the holes were driled into the sheet metal for the screws. once a hole is drilled, bare metal is exposed for rust to start.

I think the plastic bubble at the sun roof is more of a wind deflector when the roof is open.

Anniversary Addition? Yikes!!! that is a very rare model, I think they only made one. grab it quick. surprised the guy isn`t asking $18,000 for it. Hurry before the price goes up

I do not believe hubcaps wheels were an option for the w123 300D turbo's- so they are not original. Looks like a sellers being tricky trying to get more money with bullsh&^ add-ons.

I'm pretty sure Karl founded his business in 1881 with Gottleid starting his business in 1890.

The only significant thing that happened in 1885 was the creation of the grandfather clock engine, but Wikipedia has "citation needed" marks all around it so I doubt it.

This guy is a fool.

Dealers added all kinds of things to make them stand out and sell in the '80s, I've even seen dealer-installed vinyl tops.

Could have been anyone added this badge.

could be worse, they could have glued the badge "Custom Deluxe" on there as well.

That is a really poor place for the labeling though, that stuff is usually on like 25th year mustangs or impalas or what not, and the label is usually tastefully done down on the door or lower fender.

I have checked dealer records in two countries, and both have told me they have never heard of/seen/sold/serviced an anniversary edition Mercedes.

Does this guy have some kind of documentation? I'd like to see that!
