Accelerator linkage adjustment

Can someone tell me the proper way to adjust the accelerator linkage on a 300D (turbo). The reason I ask is that at rest (or idle) with no pressure on the accelerator, my linkage on top of the valve cover does not go all the way back to the detent on the pivot arm. Instead, it is forward of the detent. I can move it back by hand, but if you press on the accelerator pedal and then let it go back to idle it is forward of the detent again.

The included picture shows the part of the linkage I am talking about (circled in red) The picture is of what I am told is normal.

Thanks,

Glenn
