R&R Serpentine Belt 606 W124
Do you have to remove the fan coupling and fan and shroud? Seems like you could just wrap the belt around the fan?
Thanks

Well, it looks like you have too. I could not get the old belt off around the fan or the new one on.
Taking the fan off is a bit tougher that it should be for a maintenance item. This bolt is a T50 star bolt and you need a super slim ratchet to get it in there to clear the radiator. I'm going to have to go to sears and see if i can find thinner ratchet. it is ridiculous to need special tools for changing a belt. How do most people get these fan bolts out?

Bummer. On the 602 it states the same thing, but you can get the belt off without removing the fan.

Yeah, there is like this extra metal part sticking out of engine making it really tough to get around the idler and what not. Simpler to just take off fan. Except you need special tools. Geesh.
What type of socket is the 602? Did you need a thin profile one? I have to do one of those too. The 606 is a T40. I put it on a gear wrench with adapter which was a bit thinner than my ratchet. But still could not clean the radiator and get in the bolt. Going to try sears for low profile T-40. Thanks

Woohoo! You don't have to take off fan to get belt on. Good thing too cause this fan bolt is funny and i couldn't get anything on it. Manual says it 8MM allen but I couldn't get an 8MM allen in it.
Note I said T-40 in above post. Moderator could you delete that misinforming post? I got a T50 * in it but it didn't feel right enough to turn. I think the bolt might be buggered up. Can anyone confirm what bolt head is on the fan for W124 606?

The fan comes off with a stubby 8mm allen key socket. You have to buy a special set of these stubby allens. Then you put an adapter in the back of the stubby socket that gives you a nut on the end. You then turn it with a standard wrench. This gives you enough clearance in front of the radiator. Simply putting the stubby 8mm socket on a ratchet would not give you enough clearance to access the bolt. At least this is true for my 1995 E300 OM606.

I cannot get any sort of ratchet on the samstag sales little stubby socket - what I used to do was take a regular 8mm allen key to loosen the bolt, and use the stubby socket between both index fingers to unscrew the bolt.
I improvised it - its basically the bolt spinner tool, I cut a little piece off my 8mm key and had it welded to a piece of flat bar with a ground end to recieve a 12mm socket attachment over it - the little bar is articulated by a another lever bar. To remove insert tool into bolt, use a 3.8 extension and 12mm socket for added leverage to the little flat bar, once loose - remove extension and spin the bolt with the large articulated flat. simple and easy - I can now take out the fan in 1 minute tops. |

Agreed, it's an 8mm Allen. It's probable that all of the OM60x engines use this same bolt. I would think that the shorter 601 and 602 engines would have a lot more working room between the block and the radiator but I've never worked on one.
Like Zulfigar, I used a standard 8mm Allen key with a piece of 1/2" steel pipe for leverage. Once the bolt is loose you can get an Allen socket in there and remove the bolt by hand. Sometimes, when you get the bolt all the way out, there isn't enough room to remove the tool and the bolt - it's jammed up against the radiator. In that case, you can unscrew the bolt part way, remove the tool, and unscrew the bolt the rest of the way with your fingers. Jeremy
