Replace Front Control Arm Bushing
1987 300sdl
Can someone explain to me how the front control arm bushings work when your installing new ones. It looks like they are two bushings that come together to make one large bushing. I’ve replaced Honda control arm bushings and it was one large bushing that had to be hydraulically pressed into the control arm. Is it better off for me to simple just purchase a new upper and lower control arm or purchase the bushings and press them in myself. Is these something I can do with a vice, or do I need to take it to a machine shop for them to do the work? And what is the bushing called that the sway bar goes into the control arm. That thing is totally rotted out. Thanks for your help http://www.allpartsexpress.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1987-MERCEDES--BENZ-300sdl--/--L6_3.0l_diesel_turbo-Front--End--/--Suspension--Steering&yearid=1987%40%401987&makeid=MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&engineid=1194083%40%40300SDL++%2F+L6_3.0L_DIESEL_Turbo%40%40300SDL&catid=Front+End+%2F+Suspension+%26+Steering&subcatid=Front%20Control%20Arm%20Bushing&mode=PA

Are you referring to the upper control arm bushings or the lower control arm bushings?
The approach is completely different............. The link for which you reference is not for the control arm bushings at all..........those are the bushings that support the stabilizer bar in the upper control arm. The title is somewhat misleading. |

I am not sure on your particular car but on a 123:
The Lower Control arm is too expensive to replace and even if you bought a new one it still might not come with the Lower Control Arm Bushings already installed. The Upper Control Arms are another story; new they come with the Bushings already installed. With both Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushings there are alignment marks. The Bushings are only supposed to go in one way. Also after both of them are on the car install the retaining nuts on the Bolts that hold them in but do not tighten them. The Car needs to be sitting on the ground on the Wheels when you Torque the Nuts. Below is a pic of the alignment of the Lower Control Arm Busnings shown in the pic installed (the little square rubber tabs at the top and bottom) on a 123, I looked at a parts break down of your car and the parts are similar toa 123 so I am guessing how they are assembled may be the same. Also if your Vice is big enough it can be used to press in the Lower Control Arm Bushings

Is the thing that is Rotted Out the Steel Tip of the Sway Bar or is it just the Rubber pieces?

Now that I think about it, I should replace both upper and lower.

The lower control arm bushings are quite a bit more work. They must be drilled a bit to remove the caps and then the bushing is pressed out of the arm. The new bushing is pressed into the arm and the caps are pressed onto the ends of the bushing. It's difficult...........even with a press. |
