1991 300D 2.5

I need some help identifying a part that's leaking. The part is located just above the driver side motor mount below the IP. It is sort of shaped like a cylinder. The suction side of the fuel pump enters the rear of it and the primary fuel filter line enters through the front. It seems to be leaking from the front; not from the fuel line itself but around the smaller cylinder sticking out of it.(Now that I think about it, I guess it's my fuel supply...duh)What is it called? I'm trying to figure out if there's a washer, 0-ring or something similiar that needs to be replaced before I just dig in???? It also appears to be a little loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it sounds like its either your primary pump or the fuel heater, if it has one. A pic would let there be confirmation.

I did a little more research. I'm beginning to beleive that it is the heater, it's definitely not the primary pump(that is attached to the IP). Thanks for the response.

That is your fuel thermostat, mine started leaking after I changed my fuel filter. I bought a used one from someone on this forum and that fixed the problem. I also found someone on ebay that sells a kit to fix this problem, I havent tryed that yet but thinking about it.

Is it the fuel thermostat or fuel heater? How hard is it to remove?

It is the fuel thermostat and it is held on the motor by two alen bolts, not too bad to replace. Just make sure you dont mix the hoses up.

The fuel heater and the fuel thermostat are the same thing. Does it look like this? If so, you are looking at the Fuel Thermostat (Heater). I think you can buy rebuild kits for it.

I'm not planning to rebuild righjt now. I'm swapping one from a '87 300 SDL. By the way , the SDL just arrived at my local yard. The engine was well cared for if anyone is interested. Everything is intact except for the fuel heater and tension damper which I am about to remove. All door panels and windows are intact. There is damage on the rear passenger side which is why it ended up here. Someone has already got to the window and seat switches.

Well I finished removing the fuel heater from the SDL. Since I drove my 300 to the local yard I'm waiting for the engine to cool a bit before I R+R mine. I noticed that while removing the replacement It wasn't really bad at all. It uses a 3/16 allen bolt(I used my T30 on the first one...perfect fit) It was too tight to get my T30 on the second bolt; so I had to use an allen wrench. Removing the clips(phillips head) that attach the hoses were a little tedious. My fuel heater was so dirty that I was lead to beleive that the allen bolts that attach it to the block were underneath. I was releived when I noticed them on the top.
By the way...when it starts leaking; I mean it really leaks. If you've heard stories beleive me they were not exaggerations. It's like someone cut the fuel line or someting. I've lost over a quarter of a tank of fuel in about 16 hours and it's still dripping pretty steadily. It started with just a trickle. I tightened the hose and it appeared to stop. 2 days later there's a serious puddle in my driveway. Nevertheless I got the fuel heater and a tensioner damper both for $20. I'll install the replacement...order the repair kit and rebuild my original one.

Oh man. Wish i had posted earlier. When it does that just bypass the thing. You can leave the coolant lines connected. It does absolutely nothing unless its cold. And then it has to be really cold to make any difference. In the south apparently we just ignore these things. I bought two 300Ds and both had the heater bypassed.

O-Ring Mercedes Part # 011 997 39 48

If it leaks from the "Front" it's the O-Ring.(number 149 in the Pictogram)
Easy quick FIX...
Remove the Circlip (#161)...
Remove the Cover(#155)...
R+R O-Ring (#149)...CAREFUL of the Spring (#137)

It tells you something about a "Professional" WT (Wrench Turner) who "Bypasses" the Thermostat/Heater.
It's actually a lot MORE EFFORT to Bypass rather than replace one o-ring!
