W123 new prices...

My '83 240D's sticker shows $25k, a friend's family-owned '84 300D was over $30k.

license plates

The only time a list price makes me choke is when the car is newer than '83. That is the year that Michigan quite charging license fee's by WEIGHT and went to the new system of "BASE STICKER PRICE" of the vehicle when NEW. This is a depreciating scale ( not depreciated enough if you ask me!) and I'm not sure how it works exactly. All I know is it costs me $30 per year to put a plate on my 300D '76 and it costs me $160 per year to put one on my '84 300TD-T.

I guess you can see why I liked the old system and therefore try to limit my Mercedes purchases to the pre '83 vintage! Tom

In 2001 USD:

240D - $16770 = 41,199
300D - $21497 = 52,811
300CD - $24280 = 59,648
300TD - $24569 = 60,358
300SD - $27000 = 66,331
280E - $22943 = 56,364
280CE - $25650 = 63,014
280SE - $26910 = 66,110
450SEL- $33778 = 82,982
450SL - $31589 = 77,604
450SLC- $37542 = 92,229

Proof positive that by and large, MB's are cheaper today...

My Folks drive a hard bargin and they got my ole girl for just over $27,000 USD in 1985.
Now I'm thinking of parting with her and getting something more sporty and I can't believe what Edmunds says an excellent low milage 85 Turbo Diesel is worth, approx. $5K.
Sheez, the wheels and the sound system cost that much....

I really don't want to give it away, I wonder if someone could find anything for $6-7K that would be as reliable or last as long as my ole friend

Thumbs down don't forget the vig you pay the bank

Hey guys don't for get the interest paid to the bank when you buy a car on time. You end up paying close to 3x the purchase price. OH BABY, has any one taken a knee to the groin lately!

You're borrowing from the bank-o-Vinny!!

I financed my 1998 C230:

Purchase price (including taxes) : $46,000

less my down payment: $10,710

Total financed: $35,290 for 48 months at 8.0%.

48 monthly payments at $861.53 = $41,353.

Total paid = $41,353 + $10,710 = $52,063

$52,063 - $46,000 = $6063.00 cost of borrowing.

The total cost was 1.13 times the full purchase price, far from a multiple of 3! I paid a total of 13%, plus the opportunity cost of of not investing my $10,710.

I have copies of the invoices for both my Benzes, compliments of MB. My '80 SD had a base MSRP of $30,632. Options, leather($1,013), electric sunroof ($745), metallic paint ($728), and Becker "Mexico" cassette stereo radio ($355). Total MSRP of $33,473. That was in June of 1980. Dealer cost was $26,778, talk about making a profit. My TD, '83 had a base price of $33,850, options: sliding roof (manual) $657. There was no charge for the Becker Europa stereo cassette. Total price $34,507. That was in March of '83. Dealer cost was $27,606. You have to remember that there was a built in profit of almost 25% for the dealers back then. Of course these days that has been cut dramatically, due to competition. When I e-mailed MB for the invoice on my wagon, they actually called and said that I had to fax them a copy of my registration and the request for the invoice. I did this and exactly 1 week later I received the invoice. For those interested the fax number to Customer Relations it is (201) 476-6213.

A 30 year mortgage at 9.4% is a 3 times cost. A 5 year car loan would require over 56% interest. Roger (calculated on a monthly basis)

I'm at home this morning, so have the sticker for my '87 TDT wagon handy. It's pretty scary:

Base price :$45,790.00
Palomino Leather: 1385.00
Third Seat : 1010.00
Sliding Roof : n/c
----------------------------
Total $48,185.00

That was a lot of money 14 years ago!

Price of car when new? Interesting discussion!

Hmmm... anyone got any ideas what a 220D listed for in 1971? Just curious.
