How do counter hold the water pump to remove fan 602
I'm trying to remove the viscous fan clutch on a 602 2.5 T in a W124 to change out the vac pump. I can't even get the plastic fan shroud out without removing the fan .
I have my 8 MM allen on the bolt but i just cant hold that pulley still. I had someone push on top of belt while i turn but it keeps moving. The manual says use counter hold tool which looks like just something you put on and push down? What do you all use to hold the pulley or how do you do this job? Does sears have a pulley holder tool? Thanks

Looks like sears has several. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/search_10153_12605?keyword=pulley+holder+kit&x=0&y=0&vName=Tools
Can anyone say what tool they use. I do this enough i'd like to get a good tool to make the job nice and smooth.

this is what I use on the 606 , t might work for you? An allen key at the back of the pulley and got hold by the pump design?
Worked for me, might work for you?

I remove the serpentine belt and wrap it around the pulley, and then clamp it with one hand. That seems to work.

I used a strap wrench from Sears - plastic with a piece of fan belt through it. I put it around the pulley and it held against the torque of the wrench.

there are 2 possibilities w/out looking at it. one is a lever tool that slips over the pulley and belt, then you clamp the belt against the pulley by pulling the lever toward the front of the car. some of them have a small hole in the back of the pulley and you need a special tool like a long bent handle w/ a 1/8" or so pin on the end of it. you slide the handle down behind the pulley and turn the pulley until the pin pops into the hole. then you can unscrew the fan w/ the allen wrench. assuming its long enough to get decent torque on it.

The harbor freight pulley spinner tool works awesome. Get one if you have to do this. Small and cheap. The rubber part -- edit it's not rubber , it's black metal -- goes over the belt and metal part inside pulley and torque to right and it tightens . Awesome. Thanks for the tips. This is the best counter hold tool for serpentine belt i have seen (only one too ).

I'm impressed harbor freight is getting a good selection of auto tools. Unfortuneately they are all made in china. I wonder if autozone has the loaner tool for this? That would be cool. I'm gonna take it and show it to them.
