Joy. I did do a complete oil/filter change and also took out the fuel tank and replaced with a freshly steamed and treated 300D fuel tank with all new lines and clamps. I'll try the MMO soak over the next week as I'll be driving a different vehicle that week any way. How about Kroil, would that work better?

Use Marvel Mystery Oil, I think that will be best.

I'm afraid that says it all. Some people have had luck in loosening up stuck rings from WVO by running some water into the intake. I think forum member Alistair has some posts on this topic.

I'll bet the excessive oil consumption is the reason the PO sold it. I'd never buy a MB with WVO history.

If the oil rings are stuck, shouldn't there be a lot of blowby into the intake? Has that line been blocked or plugged?

There doesn't appear to be much blow-by (read first post) but I do have a low profile K&N breather filter on the way to put on the VC just in case.

I have have about an 80 mile drive home this evening and have put 1.5 quarts of MMO in the engine to top off the oil level, so hopefully that will get things started. Sunday or Monday I'll pull the injectors and top the cylinders off with MMO and let them sit until the following Saturday and then we'll see what happens. It may be a few weekends before I can tackle the valve stem seals but any reduction in oil consumption will be easy to spot, especially since my "emissions" should visibly lessen!

I might, but I'd be planning for an engine replacement in the near future, and the price I'd be willing to pay would reflect that.

Oil rings control oil. Compression rings control compression and blowby. It's possible for the oil rings to go bad while the compression rings stay good, and vice versa.

I just picked up on this thread. I have had several older M-B diesels which were big oil consumers (on the order of a quart every 500 to one every 100 miles or so). They always ran fine otherwise and nothing I did ever improved them (new valve seals included in that list, but nothing on the bottom of the motor). I think they were the oil rings that were bad in them as each had good compression and always started well even in winter. I came to the conclusion that as long as oil was cheaper than any solution it made sense to just keep driving them and topping them off. I sold every one with full disclosure and as far as I know they are all still running. Sometimes you need to mutter the serenity prayer and just keep driving.

Remember to keep the cylinders full for those days. Then when your done turn the motor over with the injectors out to shoot the MMO out of the cylinders.

Be sure to draw a vacuum on the shutoff valve or you'll also be shooting diesel fuel everywhere too.

Will do, I'll be driving Dad's Powerstroke next week to give it some highway miles so will have him keep the MMO topped on the cylinders for the parked 240D while I'm gone until next weekend. I'm going to get some Delvac 1650 to run in it if no noticeable improvement after a couple weeks of my normal drive, hopefully that will help zero-in on it being an oil ring problem. Heck, if I can manage the $$$ maybe running Mobil-1 for a time will loosen them up! Otherwise I've got three turbo OM617's, one NA OM617 and another OM616 to choose from for a rebuild to replace this one!

Did you ever get those rings unstuck?

I've got a similar issue with an '82 240d and I'm thinking of trying the same thing.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?
